Right now, my store's URL is www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=FigBits

It should be www.bricklink.com/FigBits

(or even figbits.bricklink.com)

The suggestion won't really help me at this point, since I have a much simpler
URL than either of those (figbits.com), but I think it would be good for others.

It may still not make sense for those whose username isn't the same as their
store's name
(ash_274 "Ash's Extras)

Maybe a re-direct system could be created for stores using your suggestions above,
but the ".asp" construction is pretty much required for how Bricklink is built.
I would vote YES for the latter, if it didn't require too much effort from Admin.
A shorter URL would look nicer on a business card.

I agree, a shorter easier to remember URL would be nice, again if it wasn't huge
amounts of work.

I vote, Yes -- but only if it doesn't cause Admin a lot of mucking about in ASP
to accomplish the task. It would be simpler and cleaner, no doubt.

thats very, very simple to do, just redirect those new urls to standard store
urls. Boom done.

Even better (but more complicated): let sellers type what the URL should be (up
to 30 alphanumeric characters) so that we can have store names as the url instead
of our usernames

Yes. This issue is why I changed my username to match my store name. I didn't
want "fleury" in the URL, as it didn't make sense.

Harder to implement then you think. They are 3 different methodologies

www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=FigBits runs a query against the BL database
and returns the result of your store if it exists

www.bricklink.com/FigBits designates a file folder that resides on the sites
webroot

figbits.bricklink.com points to a server location/designation

Neither of your 2 suggestions can be generated on the fly. Which means each new
store would need to be manually added to the system and name changes would have
to be handled the same way.

Latter can be done using certain scripts to get nick from http://(nick).bricklink.com
into http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp=p=(nick).

How do you handle the DNS issue? I have "A" records for all my server/machine

It's a strange server setup that intercepts those special URLs and strips out
data and redirects user to site according to the found data. I never did such
thing so I'm not too sure how it works.

Something like https://help.brinkster.com/KB/a125/how-do-i-redirect-a-domain-or-subdomain.aspx
but more general version could work. Dunno...

That handles the DNS but still redirects to a folder. "Sub domains will be directed
to their own folder."

So there would have to be a file folder for each store. All of which exist only
has DB query result objects not files.

Cute trick for a different project I'm working on now though.

Seems it can be done to build any kind of url. Including normal store urls.

I definetely agree with the idea, I was thinking about it...Many times people
ask me what's the address of the shop where I sell LEGO and http://www.bricklink.com/store.asp?p=Sud
doesn't seem very professional...
