Instead of drastically changing BrickLink's feedback system so late in the game,
how about giving sellers the option of asking their buyers to take a brief survey
assessing their transaction and then posting the results of that survey in their
feedback profile via a link to another page containing only those survey results?

This would be OPTIONAL for sellers to include with their feedback profile and
OPTIONAL for buyers to complete. However, once opted in, a seller cannot opt
out if he does not like the results of the survey.

I really like ebay's undisclosed rating function. My thoughts are something
similar would resolve the fear of retaliation issues.

A wise man once said:
"BrickLink's feedback system is not broken. I like it just the way it is and
I
think it works quite fine as is. Changing it now after 2 million orders and 4
million feedbacks have already been left will only create new problems and complications."

People don't take feedback seriously now as it is. Ask buyers to take a survey
would likely lead to more fear of retaliatory feedback.

Sometimes a positive is left because the average of the order is better than
one specific detail. So I don't know that I would want to point out that the
seller offered a great selection of parts, provided a quick invoice, took their
time to drop the package in the mail, it arrived quickly after shipment, and
was packaged well.

If something like this was implemented, I would expect that the results would
be visible on the user's feedback profile, I wouldn't want to search feedback
links for the information.

Also, would these be customizable surveys or a general one?

"This may be nice in theory, but in practice it will be subject to the same problems
already inherent in the current system - the main one IMO being that many people
don't want to be too harsh on others."

I disagree. The fear of retaliation is there. In fact, I'm always hesitant
to post non-positive feedback.

Take my recent instance. I asked for forum advice for a less than satisfactory
purchase. The general consensus was to contact the seller. Well, that didn't
turn out to be pleasant. The person freaked on me, here and in emails, about
posting an anonymous forum message. It became so f'ed-up that all I wanted to
do was forget I even transacted with them. This was by far the most uncomfortable
situation I've encounter here. Naturally, I'm afraid of retaliation, if I post
honest feedback. This could potentially be my first negative. I'd like to have
truly earned my first.

It may be lame, but sometimes I just want to be done with this site. It's just
too frustrating wondering when you're going to wake up to a negative.

Wow, and I thought I had pressure.

If you like, I will buy from you, leave a negative joke feedback for you then
you can get it out of the way!

I felt horrible when I got my 1st real negative (not on this store). I felt
I let people down!

After that, it got easier, and I found that some of the negatives are deserved
and others are just people who had a bad day or life and want to just lash out
at anyone they can.

Any time I order, I look at the negatives, and who left them. That can tip my
opinion, however if it is just one or two negatives compared to 1000x that in
postitive, then I know you are doing something right. Don't sweat the small
stuff, you can't always please everyone.

I'll make you a deal. Send me a coupon, and regardless of the transaction, I'll
give you a negative. Sometimes you just gotta jump in that cold lake and get
over the shock.

An anonymous survey for previous buyers or sellers would be interesting.

For a buyer:
Rate Invoice speed, Packing speed (time between payment and shipping), Quality
of packaging, Quality of parts (or sets)

For a seller:
Prompness of payment, communications (if there are problems or special requests)

Additional comments for both.

But only available after FB has been left, and locked in place, so that there
could be retaliation for comments.

I'd settle if my buyers actually updated the status of the orders after I ship
them out. I have 8 Orders sitting with No status other then, "Since they didn't
complain I guess they got it Status" that is the invisible one you can select.

This is only within the last 3 months and I have a tiny Store. I couldn't imagine
have a big one and dealing with this.

I'd rather have a system that will not let you Order from another store until
you "BUS" your Status of ALL previous orders. Doesn't mean you have to force
FB but would be nice. At the very Least require the Buyer and or Seller to commit
to updating the status of orders.
