I would like to suggest this since it seems like a VERY sore subject.

I asked a friend to help me get a splash page done.

He did.

He put up pics for me, opening a can of worms.

I would like to suggest a simple solution.

New pics uploaded that people do not WANT ANYONE TO USE either have a copy lock
on them, or a watermark.

Pics without the locs and/or watermark are open source pictures for open source
use.

This solves 2 problems! If they have watermark and people use them it will be
easier to prove whom put the pic up.

2nd it will keep these silly and rather pointless discussions from happening.

I was busy, and I posted in haste.

I did not mean to offend any of the people who give their time to the site.

But my argument is I PAY BILLS TO THIS SITE, in fact quite a bit of money. I
tried to use pictures on a site directly linked to my store, to promote a FREE
GIVEAWAY of product FROM MY STORE.

No URLS (except the one assigned by blogger), No promotions outside BL, in fact
I even posted that this is a temp site (which it is, and I am hoping someone
will fix the 2nd splash page problem for me so I can transfer that information
to that 2nd page).

Again, sorry to offend. Have a great night.

I would vote no.

ALL of the images on BrickLink are copyrighted. If you want to use them elsewhere,
you need to get permission from the copyright owner. It's really very simple.

thats got nothing to do with it.

When someone submits their picture to bricklink, the are giving BL a license
to use that picture in the BL catalog.

They are not giving other BL members a license to use that picture independently
of the catalog database entry to do anything at all, even if its within pages
only shown on BL.

You can have multiple pages on the splash page.

no offence taken.

I vote yes to this suggestion, autowatermarking or other methods of protecting
the IP of users who offer images in good faith can only be a good thing

I voted no.

It was really kind of you to delete the original message, where YOU stated that
you used Bricklink pictures, without permision. I do believe that there would
not be an issue, if you had not posted about it in the first place. I have no
idea why you posted the original post, maybe you like all the attention.

Here it is, for those that missed it...

http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=492368

And here is the text, that YOU deleted, note the part where you say "We plan
to use BL images on this site since the site is direct usage for our
bricklink store."...

  Good morning.

We have asked a past member to help us with a site for our black friday points
system.

I know we should ask permission for this, but truthfully we do not have the time.

We plan to use BL images on this site since the site is direct usage for our
bricklink store.

This site will be disposed of the week after Black Friday.

Please forgive this usage since we have no time to take pictures of items we
are giving away for free.

The site will be at http://blackfridaypoints.blogspot.com/ and you will be able
to check on your points as the posts come up.

Thank you for the understanding, and look forward to the promotion.

By the way, I take back the no vote, this suggestion is a valid one, and I will
into it more before I vote.

Again, sorry. I posted that in haste. I meant to say;

We plan to use BL images, not we are going to use.

Again, it was the intention of the post to have anyone who had issue contact
us about it, not to spit at them.

Sorry again if it came off incorrectly.

I was very busy, and I needed to post it since I was going to be using this all
of next week to keep track of the points (which I may add is getting to be quite
difficult).

Sorry to offend, was not meant to.

Have a nice night.

And I removed the original post since it was resolved.

Maybe easier just to buy a cheap camera. You will need zoom and macro functions.
I just got one for $50 that has all the functions of a $300 camera.
Take your own shots and no one can argue with you, sounds cheaper too at $5 per
pic you are offering.

How easy is it to add a watermark? Honestly, cause I don't know. Would BL automatically
place a watermark (with the image owner's info too)?

These image contributors are important to BL and the catalog. If it would cause
more work to be added to an already upaid endeavor, there might be less submissions.

Part of the reason that I would vote no to the suggestion is that I don't like
watermarks.

I'm assuming that we are talking about conspicuous messages across the image.
I wouldn't care if we were to implement invisible digital watermarks, but I don't
think that's the suggestion. The suggestion as I understand it is to have a visible
message on the image, saying something like "copyright so-and-so, 2010".

Those are easy to add (to answer your actual question). But I find them annoying.
