Over the years a lot of suggestions have been made to prevent scam sellers from
getting loads of orders, take the money and run.
I'm sure BL is trying to work out systems to prevent such things from happening
in future, so it would be good to rank up all the potential options one could
imagine to have limitations, to have faster action on potential scam stores and
to potentially send warnings to buyers with open orders.
Please don't make this thread into a discussion, just state a clear idea,
without too much blah blah and without arguing about pro's and contra's,
without repeating or applauding to another ones suggestion, so just simple
things like the one below, with a brief indication/explanation of the option

Certain things could apply for new sellers with no feedback or when a member
opens a store (if if the member has hundreds or thousands of feedbacks from buying),
untill either they proof themselves by generating selling feedback, and/or by
giving proof items are in stock and/or by prooving who they are. Some of the
suggestion may conflict with eachother, but that is besides the intention of
the thread, let's just rank up the ideas in an easy to review thread for
the site admins so they can compile the ideas.

* Lot limitation: New sellers usually start pretty small and build up their store
along the way, so a lot limitation could prevent scammers using the PO function
on high valued sets. Example: maximum 200 lot's (legit sellers would probably
get a few orders a long the way and build up feedback)

* value limitation: example 500$, legit sellers would probably start small with
a limited inventory, get a few orders and work their way up. This limit would
exclude newbies from selling high valued sets soon they open a store, and for
legit sellers starting small, $500 is most likely quite a nice base to get started
(parts/minifigs/small and medium sets) and rank up some orders and feedbacks.

* maximum on 'number' of orders during the first month, for example 1/day
and 3/week, if no complaints during that month (no negatives, no neutrals, no
NSS/NRS statusses), upgrade to 2/day and 5/week the next month, if still no complaints,
full access

* Tags on high valued sets, so the admins would get a warning, sellers with a
sellers feedback lower then 10 for example.

* As admins can't be around 24/7: select a number of people worldwide who
can tag stores or listings, if a store or an item get's tagged by 3 different
people: Closure as 'preventive action', or block an item from being bought,
so the admins can review if there is a problem or not, the next business day
or their next avaliable moment online, with offcourse a mail to the admins to
check the situation or the item for sale that was 'locked'.

* If a store is locked (except if the reason is non payment of fees): a warning
to all buyers with open orders to either delay payment for a few days, to contact
seller to ask for tracking or proof of postage if shipped or ask information
about the status of the order and expected shippingdate if not yet shipped.

* Obligation for brand new sellers to have Paypal among the offered accepted
payment methods (after all they'll need to pay fees to BL for the sales,
so they need Paypal anyway).

* BL as temporary withholder of funds particulary on larger orders from newbie
sellers (I'm not in favor of this myself, but I do consider it an option).

* More proof on who sellers are, prior to being allowed opening a store: ID card
/ Drivers license / a small Paypal payment / Business documentation / etc, so
BL has the sellers details on record and can compare it to the registered address.

So, ideas like that with brief explanation and again, please don't make it
a discussion, just state your idea on what could help to improve BL in regards
to prevent scams

have frequent address changes, BL already allows a secondary address for people
to use, so there is no reason to allow several changes per year or even per month.
Sure people move once in a while, but I doubt many members move every few months
(even APO/FPO most likely don't).
The suggestion is to put in a limitation on the number of address changes, like
once every 2 months or each quarter at most, this should limit the options for
dropshippers to abuse the system.
Granted, this won't solve the problem when buyers requests this by mail,
but sellers can choose to disregard such...

Dropshipping is a growing problem in the world of e-commerce, remember that sellers
usually are on the loosing end when something goes wrong, particulary if paid
by Paypal, as usually it will not be the buyers address you'll be shipping
to...

Eric

I thought this sounded familiar ... http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=932111

I'm all for it, regardless of who makes the suggestion.

The reason was different, but the final outcome for both suggestions would serve
to solve both issues indeed. I do think it should be more then 1 month, 2 at
least, but preferably 3 or 4 months in between an address change would limit
these kind of abuse.

Now what has changed that would require a 'fixing'?

A lot of sellers prepare their order, then send an invoice, buyers pays, order
is set to packed.
Others prepare after being paid, so if the seller followed the procedure (aka
setting the order 'paid', when indeed payment got in), and now the system
does it, then nothing has changed either...

the same, so time well spent

Why would my analysis and conclusions be flawed
If you run 'full time' (with several people) a business, of which 'BL'
is only part, with the amount of orders on BL, 1 person could do the 'BL'
processing, while others process orders from other venues. I do understand that
your method is a typical 'BO' method, because indeed the BO system allows
an intermediate step: 'processing', before an order is set 'processed'
(I oftenly skip the intermediate step) and it allows you to know 'someone'
is handling a certain order. Granted, right now BL doesn't allow such, but
if you have 1 person focussing on BL and 'filling' in on BO (and/or other
venues), then your problem is solved

How about an alert when a payment comes in via PP on site. Maybe a "$" icon similar
to when we get a new BL message.

Julie

Now what exactly has changed
'before' you would send an invoice with either you PP e-mail or a link.
Buyer pays, PP send a notification to 'warn' you, you login to PP, check
the payment and set the order on Bl to 'paid'
'now' you have a 'pay' button, you invoice the buyer, the buyer
clicks 'pay', PP sends you a notification, and sends a message trough
the PP/BL-API to put the order in 'paid' status, you login to PP, check
the payment and you don't need to do a thing on BL...
Not much has changed, I really don't see why all of a sudden people wanna
change something to the whole system that has worked fine for years on Ebay/Amazon/BO
and thousands of other websites using this method...

Oh, and I strongly recommend *if* you're using the 'PP onsite' method,
to remove any payment details (or payment links) from your invoices... just use
the 'pay' method and problem solved

No change sparked my suggestion.

I have a buyer from last night that needed their order rushed and chose PP onsite.
They haven't paid yet. Rather than checking PP to see if payment showed up,
it would be nice to get a little visual alert on BL.

Julie

Just check you order overview and if the status says 'paid' then it's
paid
Or check your regular inbox to find out if PP send you a notification...

If a buyer is really in a hurry, presumably they would pop you a message anyway
saying: 'hey I paid, why isn't this shipped yet'

I don't really believe in 'rush orders' anymore, most buyers then
take 24-48 (or more) hours to pay and then suddenly *you* need to rush Doesn't
mean I wouldn't do the effort to get it out asap, but the asap starts when
I notice the order has been paid for, not when the buyer requested me a fast
invoice

Orders paid for onsite now cause the order status to be set to PAID automatically.

Please either move the new PAID status to the Payment Status column (where logically,
it should be), or if it must appear under the Order Status for technical reasons,
at least allow the PROCESSING order status to be selected after PAID status has
been set.

For discussion of the problem, see threads
http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=933149
http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=931965

I'm quite puzzeld by your request...
For starters I agree there should be an extra option in the order status options,
something like 'picking', before it can set to 'packed', as it
would be conveniant for larger stores who have more then one person to process
orders, so they know if the picking lists have been 'handed out'.
But...
If a store has multiple people to do the picking, then I assume they have set
up a system which allows them to know who is doing what... I do assume these
'compagnies' have persons who communicate with eachother, organised by
the shop owner, no? I don't so 'why' suddenly this has become a problem,
because from a technical point of view, if the shopowner used to check received
payments, he/she would set the order in 'paid' status, and after all,
it always came 'after' the processing status... So nothing has changed,
the only thing that is happening now, is that 'now' the shopowner doesn't
need to set the status to 'paid' as it is done automaticly.

I notice from your FB list, that for the past year you have received about 410
feedbacks.
Some of them are for you as a buyer (I did not check how many), and assuming
about 20-25% of people do not leave feedback, it means you had about 500 Orders
on BL the past 12 months. That's less then 1.5 orders per day, yet you're
not able to manage the 'status' of orders or to 'know' which
'picker' is doing what Granted, I do not know whether you also sell
on other sites like Fleebay, Amazon, Brickowl and other websites, but an average
of 1.5 orders per day on Briclink seems quite managable IMHO... When I look at
my received orders for the past 12 months, I notice I had 226 on Bricklink (and
closed over 2 months) and 542 on Brickowl, totalling +765 orders, and did it
all by myself 'after' my dayjob... I never had an issues to 'know'
which order had to be picked, as at all times, an order in 'paid' status
would go at the back of the pile, first in first out (in most cases), with an
average processing time of less then 48 hours (=order shipped)
Now don't get me wrong, it's not a critisism as I have no idea what else
you're running, but from your amount of processed order on BL, it would say
the only thing that is missing in you store is 'comms' between the people
who 'manage' your store and maybe a bit of lack or organisation.... Maybe
you should reduce that to just 1 person, as handling 1.5 orders per day, is IMHO
quite manageable for just 1 person

cheers, Eric

At time of checkout there is a section where the buyer is shown "I WILL PAY IN"
. There are radio buttons to select to choose different currencies if offered
in that store.
I propose adding some text to indicate the amount shown is NOT the grand total
and shipping costs are in addition to this amount. I know it is not overly common
to have a buyer pay this amount before invoicing but it does happen and this
simple added note could help prevent a buyer from thinking shipping is included
in the amount shown at checkout.

In the long run this kind of situation will dissapear with autcheckout/instant
payment

In the mean while I suggest to add a note to your order notifications (buyers
get them in their inbox):

http://www.bricklink.com/mailTempDetail.asp?ID=0&viewFrom=O

Something like this (my order notifications start with this):

**************************
This is NOT an invoice, this is simple notification you placed an order. Please
do NOT sent payment until you receive an invoice. You should receive your invoice
with payment instructions within 3 days (usually 24 hours). If you have not heard
from us within this time frame please use the contact feature through your order
form to request an invoice. Thank you!
**************************
If you add to your order after the first invoice (additional batch), please wait
untill you get a new invoice before transfering the payment, as shippingcosts
might change. If payment is send before we send a new invoice and this results
in a secondary payment to cover additional shippingcosts, an additional fee of
0.35 Euro will be added.
Thanks for understanding!
**************************

It will solve lots of issues.

Once all (or most) sellers are using a checkout process, where payment is collected

in this forum will become non issues.

Quite right Eileen...
This suggestion and discussion is pointless as once the site progresses to autocheckout
with instant payment, this problem will solve itself for the majority of cases
(particulary the ones with Paypal). Ok, the ones with other payment methods will
remain (IBAN / Bantransfers / cash / checks / etc), but those particular payment
methods always require extra transfer time, so from that point of view it would
be foolish to review the current 'timings'...

Thanks,

I'll say yes, because I don't wanna say no to such a suggestion, allthough
I'll never use it, as it can be done quite easely with Brickstock (and I
always use Brickstock to part out these days anyway), so I do feel the need for
counterparts being present in PO's as I regulary pat out used sets myself.
But this should remain a selectable 'option' when starting a partout.

Even if orders were "archived" after 6 months and you had to query them separately
from normal orders, I think that would be preferable to deleting them.

I know this is even more of a long shot, and I don't know what your backup
policy is like, but it would be possible to retrieve old purged orders from any
database backups you have and restore them to the current database.

Don't see the point honestly, would only clutter up ones overview, with more
data that is rarely usefull.
If you really want a copy, print to PDF or import in brickstock, or both, as
one would serve keeping the buyers details and a general overview, the other
could serve for searches...
I wouldn't mind a small extension like 8 months in stead of 6, but mainly
because the deadline for PP claims and CC claims is 180 days, so a little extra
before they are purged might be good.
Restoring older orders is even more pointless IMHO

Comments from Submitter:
Not likely in 2013 the a type was still issued, Lordskylard already changed from regular to alternate, untill proof of contrary (presence of a type in this set), the 'a' version must be removed IMO.

A joke only works when you consider the appropriate time, place and people.
When those aren't in place it often becomes tactless. Your messages often
fall into the latter.

define appropriate time.
define appropriate place.
define appropriate people.

Why do you or anyone else feel the need to 'on behalf of whoomever' define
what is 'appropriate' in any circumstance when a 'poster' (regardless
who/when/why and how) posts a message in a certain thread that he/she feels 'fun'
to do OR find for himself/herself a 'serious' contribution (that's
what makes the human kind unique).
If a message posted on the forum is to be found 'inappropriate', then
the mods will take care of it, period.
Any other message remains 'appropriate' afaik, whether it is relevant
to the thread or not, funny or not, that it is for each to decide for him/herself.
If you don't like what Steekstra writes (or anyone else for that matter)
then just 'skip' the posts of that person, but do not try to 'define'
appropriate, as others *might* have another opinion. I've seen hundreds of
threads 'derive' from their original content, there is hardly any 'harm'
with such

Another useless contribution of Steekstra to a serious post.

Made me smile, so from my point of view it wasn't useless
And define 'serious post'...
What is 'serious' for one *may* be totally 'irrelevant' for others,
and vice versa

  In Suggestions, renhoffman writes:
I recently had a buyer purchase these two minifigures from me, which I have had
in my inventory since September 2012, and January 2014, when I parted out the
sets these came in...

Minifig No: sh019 Name: Batman - Wings and Jet Pack (Type 1 Cowl)
*
sh019 (Inv) Batman - Wings and Jet Pack (Type 1 Cowl)
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Batman II

Minifig No: sh025 Name: Batman - Light Bluish Gray Suit with Yellow Belt and Crest, Dark Blue Mask and Cape (Type 1 Cowl)
*
sh025 (Inv) Batman - Light Bluish Gray Suit with Yellow Belt and Crest, Dark Blue Mask and Cape (Type 1 Cowl)
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Batman II

The buyer sent me a message claiming that I sent these...

Minifig No: sh019a Name: Batman - Wings and Jet Pack (Type 2 Cowl)
*
sh019a (Inv) Batman - Wings and Jet Pack (Type 2 Cowl)
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Batman II

Minifig No: sh025a Name: Batman - Light Bluish Gray Suit with Yellow Belt and Crest, Dark Blue Mask and Cape (Type 2 Cowl)
*
sh025a (Inv) Batman - Light Bluish Gray Suit with Yellow Belt and Crest, Dark Blue Mask and Cape (Type 2 Cowl)
Minifigures: Super Heroes: Batman II

These where added to the catalog in February of 2015. Now, I am a fan of accurate
listings, and satisfied customers, but how am I supposed to know to check my
inventory for these new listings? I was never notified that I might have these
figures listed incorrectly, and I don't have time to read every change log
that is posted. Is there any plan for notification of catalog changes in the
future? Bricklink already knows that I parted these sets out, as they are shown
in my part-out log. A simple canned message stating that a change was made to
X set, that shows in my part-out log, please check your inventory. Or, even just
a tag on MY Bricklink page, like the one that alerts you to items slated for
deletion. Is that plausible? anyone know?

Darren

Voted YES. I thought this may have been suggested before but too many to wade
through to check.

This is something that could be enhanced separate from the major redesign.
It can just be set up like a background process, similar to the new wanted list
notifications.

It would be a quick win for BL!

I like the idea as well, the site might stick to minifigs, but it also happens
with other items (I remember a gray train door appearing in a set because the
inventorier made a typo on the partnumber, and several sellers ended up with
that unexisting door in ninventory), so parts should somehow be included as well...
hoewever, if *all* inventory changes are going to be send out then one would
be facing major amounts of mails comming in (just look at the many changes per
year), not even sure it would be pratical to manage such(for sellers), so this
should be elaborated, and maybe it might be good to have the IA's decide
'which' changes are going to be send out to all people...

+ It also doesn't solve the problem *if* someone buys such items and puts
them on resale, as that person wouldn't get a notification, as there wouldn't
be a partout log on his 'account'.
So allthough it seems easy to generate warnings, the reality is that it is much
more complicated and goes far beyond a 'log' of someone having done a
PO...

Cheers, Eric

Set No: 6079 Name: Dark Forest Fortress
*

Sets: Castle: Dark Forest

* Add 3 Part 3004 Light Gray Brick 1 x 2
* Delete 4 Part 3023 Brown Plate 1 x 2

Comments from Submitter:
1. On the last page of the instructions, three light gray 1x2 bricks (3004) are added to the picture. The image on the box (in the center of the frame) shows they are for dropping down the ladder slide. Currently BL inventory shows 12. Should be 15.
2. In building up the set, there are only two brown 1x2 plates (3023) used. One more for the horse equals three. Peeron inventory also shows only three. Currently BL inventory shows four.

Your request is wrong, you need to 'adjust' quantity not add or delete
quantities, as this would 1. generate an extra lot for the Light gray bricks
and 2. remove ALL brown plates

So you need to use the 'c' (change) function and simply enter the inv.items
IDs and the new quantities for the existing lot's (and by leaving the other
fields blank)

Cheers, Eric

Would the original submitter of this inventory care to comment on the color of
the helmet and the source used? Apparently there has already been some confusion
over this helmet.

And just to be sure, is this fig a possibility?
[m=cty235]

Russell

Well, you can definitely tell by the image for
[m=cty257]
that the helmet is Flat Silver (TLG's Silver Metallic) and not Pearl Dark
Gray (TLG's Titanium Metallic).

The inventory submitter originally inventoried it as Dark Bluish Gray, and then
changed it to Pearl Dark Gray (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=M&itemNo=cty257&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1)

Therefore, I think it is safe to assume they did not fully understand the new
Flat Silver color, as it was only about one year old at that time.

Cheers,
Randy

The original inventory was done in november, the change in december, the darker
months of the year, with lack of bright natural light and most likely with the
use of artificial light. Flat Silver being a newer color and earlier on a bit
inconsistant was probably part of the reason for mis-identifying the color, so
I just checked again:
I confirm the color of the Helmet is Flat Silver and therefor this request can
be accepted.

Cheers, Eric

The chances I would actually see your message (being the original submitter)
here on the forum are quite slim, both you and Randy could have popped me a message...
I just stumbeled on it looking at 'pending' catalog changes
The answer will be found as a reply on Randy's reply.

What is the policy regarding the head for this figure and why? Thanks in advance
for your reply.

Heads - For figures with moveable arms and legs always use a head with an open
stud. When there are 2 entries in the catalog for the same head, one with an
open stud and one with a solid stud, always use the one with an open stud. Only
figures using old type torsos and/or legs (part no 17 and 15 respectively) can
have solid stud heads.

Older figs are normally with the solid stud head (up to the '90), yet, BL
took the decision a long time ago to use 'head with open stud' for all
figs with movable arms in their inventories. Technicly not correct offcourse...

Changing it all now is quite complicated and alternate heads are not possible
(but might be one of the options)

I have a yellow classic space minifig with a stickered torso. I cannot see one listed

You'll need to add it to the catalog instead of submitting an inventory change

perhaps that is why there is none with sticker. Or maybe no one has added it
yet.

* Change 1 Part Yellow {3626bp01 Minifig, Head Standard Grin Pattern - Blocked Open Stud to 3626ap01 Minifig, Head Standard Grin Pattern - Solid Stud}

Comments from Submitter:
Hi,
I recently found this minifig's inventory and found totally non-sense that the blocked open stud version head was used for it. It was a quite new idea of Lego that they used open studs for minifig heads. Since this minifig appears only in the set 6607 from the year of 1982. At this time Lego used the solid stud version heads: 3626ap01.
You can check even the instruction manual, e.g here: http://lego.brickinstructions.com/06000/6607/002.jpg
Regards,
Peter

You are very correct in your findings, however, minifigs are inventoried based
on a standard:

http://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=200

HeadsFor figures with moveable arms and legs always use a head with an
open stud(aka blocked open stud). When there are 2 entries in the catalog for
the same head, one with an open stud and one with a solid stud, always use the
one with an open stud(aka blocked open stud).

Comments from Submitter:
I checked the instructions and its only 16 and not 18.

Still nothing but while Randy was doing so well I push this one up.

I count 16 for the plane and 15 for the shuttle.
Don't know why there are 18.

Thanks.

This is a little more complicated because someone intentionally changed the count
from 16 to 18 a few years ago:
http://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp?itemType=S&itemNo=8855-1&viewDate=Y&viewStatus=1

It could be a sign of alternate instructions.

I am almost free from the Turtle inventories, so this issue and your requests
from 6285-1 will be next.

Russell

I have a boxed set, if you will allow me some time, I'll check the set, box
and instruction and will get back to this thread, but I cannot give a deadline
right now, as it will depend from other occupations the next few days. I have
this set 'up' for verification since last summer, with the intent to
sell it, but it got delayed due to renovations of my house, now that has come
up, I don't mind proceding, but as said, no deadline (but less then 2 weeks,
that's a promise)

Ugh. Sorry. One of the differences between the parts *is* seen in the first (and
the second) pic It's the non-slotted version.

The 42022's that I have also contain the non-slotted version. The slotted
one was already discontinued when this set came out, but now we have a confusion
because the original inv. submitter did not care for the mold differences

If there is confusion on an alternate, then get rid of the wrong mold unless
a reliable source (preferably an approved inventory verifier) confirms the existance
of it's presence in a set. I've always been in favor of such, it does
mean more work but at least it's more reliable

Thanks for help!

Are there different boxes for this set assigned to the different inventories?

Would need to be investigated, but probably yes, because the partcount mentioned
on outside of the box would differ no? (and maybe TLG's item number as well)
Is that a requierement anyway to get things splitted if the CA's really wanted
to?

And right now many sets have different layouts depending on region, yet we don't
have xx pictures for those sets anyway, I doubt people really bother.

and yes in some cases the box might be slightly different:

Set No: 4551 Name: Crocodile Locomotive
*
4551-1 (Inv) Crocodile Locomotive
310 Parts, 1 Minifigure, 1991
Sets: Train: 9V

remember a long time ago we discussed that set in regards to the alternate trainfront,
I chased that second version and the box layout was different, as you approved
the secondary large image (system / non system)

Guess we where doing the same check, at the same time and thinking the same thing:
another buildinginstruction ?

What is that saying about great minds?

Maybe an option for the future is a forum tag on inventory request for the IA's
and IV's to indicate someone is already checking the request

Would save the double effort... allthough it is also a confirmation offcourse...

Cheers, Eric

Yes, the real problem is when there is not enough checking going on!

In this case there seems to be a "US Version" of the instructions using extra
yellow pieces:

Part No: 6232 Name: Brick, Modified 2 x 2 with Pin and Axle Hole
*
6232 Brick, Modified 2 x 2 with Pin and Axle Hole
Parts: Brick, Modified
...so I thought maybe there was some change in the wheels, too. But if not, here
is another example of what has been done in a zero qty alternate situation, as
some of us were discussing here:
http://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=884801

(still haven't forgotten about this)

Russell

Yes I did read the discussion previously.
One option is also the xxxx-2 with seperate inventory, but that will require
the support of the CA's and so far this such suggestions been discarded (maybe
time to reconsider)
OR the system is builded up differently and allows a set to be splitted into
multiple versions inventory wise.
The set number would remain just one entry, but where the 'view inv'
there would be 2 (or more) buttons 'view inv version 1' 'view inv
version 2' etc.
The activation would not be standard, but only allowed by an IA for sets which
require it, once done the inventory can be copied and then altered by inv.requests
as any other set.
It would require extra programming of the BL inventory system offcourse and to
submit requests the extra field should be there as well...
7944-1-V1
7944-1-V2
etc
the xxxx-2 option could be done without any change to the current system offcourse

Russell

Guess we where doing the same check, at the same time and thinking the same thing:
another buildinginstruction ?

Maybe an option for the future is a forum tag on inventory request for the IA's
and IV's to indicate someone is already checking the request

Would save the double effort... allthough it is also a confirmation offcourse...

Cheers, Eric

Set No: 7944 Name: Fire Hovercraft

260 Parts, 3 Minifigures, 2007
Sets: Town: City: Fire

* Delete 12 Part 3139 Black Tire 14mm D. x 4mm Smooth Small Single

Comments from Submitter:
Please change this quantity, I've checked with instructions, page 45. Number of parts present in the set is six ( 6 ) not twelve (
12 )

I see 12
There are also 6 wheelholders

Part No: 4870 Name: Plate, Modified 2 x 2 Thin with Dual Wheels Holder - Split Pins
*
4870 Plate, Modified 2 x 2 Thin with Dual Wheels Holder - Split Pins
Parts: Aircraft
and 12 wheels

Part No: 4624 Name: Wheel 8mm D. x 6mm
*
4624 Wheel 8mm D. x 6mm
Parts: Wheel

so it would be quite odd there would be only 6 tires

Do you have a different buildinginstruction?

I would be inclined to agree with you on your first point, except for the fact
that the "b" entry for the head *is* a determined version, expressly stating
"Stud Hollow".
[p=3626bp01]
So it's not a question of sellers adding more specifics to their listings.
The specificity is built into the Item Name.

Yep, but as you stated yourself, many sellers list with the solid stud and say
nothing, other list older figs with the b type while 'history' tells
us differently, and then there are sellers who put such in the descriptions.
Ultimatly, when listing figs, one could have a tag for the specific mold, but
that needs more coding.

And regarding alternate parts for minifigs, I think this would require a whole
rebuild of the inventory system. If we added alternates to minifigs with the
present system configuration, partouts would end up with both versions, because
minifigs are not on the same virtual level as parts. For this same reason, I
believe, counterparts are not included in part outs because it would result in
duplicate listings. Changing something like that would *not* be simple. And there
is also the side effect of the alternate part skewing the year of release.

So what Don't see the point, people need to choose between part mold now
by checking their set, if the fig is parted out as well, it would need a special
Match ID, but that's it, seller would still need to choose on the 'part'
level between the 2 heads, like they do with other parts.

And from a Marketplace point of view, the site may not want alternate parts in
minifigs for reasons of product consistency. I personally would not be interested
in buying a classic fig where sellers have the option of substituting less expensive
versions of parts.

Besides the point as *now* all classic figs have the wrong head, so right now,
if the seller doesn't indicate a thing, you're still on the same playing
ground. Alternate heads with an indicator for the sellers to use would be better.

There hasn't been an issue in 15 years to buy or sell classic minifigs
Fine tuners always find their way, regardless of how an inventory is presented,
I know I always have
Doesn't mean the whole catalog needs to be turned up side down, with the
side effect buyers will loose their way around, hundreds of items will need to
be re-created, others will need to be marked for deletion, inventories will need
to be changed etc etc etc. Just for the purpose of a few dozen sellers who pay
attention to listing mold differences Like I said previously: Use the descriptions
and buyers who care will find you, it has always been like that, for many items

misleading as now.

I agree it's not perfect, but at least it's 'something' and it
would be more then what is in place now... Many c-types heads aren't attached
to figs either, yet they exist and appeared in the figs, along with b-type heads.
Alternate heads in minifigs is simply the easiest solution, regardless wether
not intirely correct when it comes down to pure 'a' type figs, but at
least it would be better then it is now IMO

What do you suggest as a plan of attack? Do you propose we change the inventories,
or do we add new entries to the catalog? If we change the inventories, should
we notify people who have the figs and/or sets with those figs for sale?

If we add new entries to the catalog, we are still adding a new restriction on
sellers. People will no longer be able to sell a new head on an old minifig.
For those of us that would never mix the new with the old, this is not an issue
of course. But what about people who don't see the difference as being major,
and want to continue substituting newer heads?

My last point - there are other parts of the minifigure that have variants. A
few to mention:

• torso - inside supports
• hands - material and design
• helmet - chin strap thickness, visor dimples
• air tanks - material
• printing of the smile
• printing of the eyes

The stud variation on the head is likely the easiest to spot, but when the minifig
is assembled, some of these other differences are arguably more important. Where
do we draw the line, then, when it comes to variations? After we handle the stud
issue, are we going to have to start the process all over again when people want
the inventories to account for some other variation?

I'm not trying to stall on this issue - I think these questions are worth
asking, and I'm interested to see people's responses.

Russell

The plan of attack is simple: leave everything as is (*), sellers can put all
details in descriptions, the buyers will search for the right mold in the listings
*if* they care.

(*)when it comes down to solid stud heads, the answer is also simple: ask the
programmers to program the option of alternate heads and they will be added to
the inventory of the figs, sellers can then specify (as usual) if they like to
deferentiate. It doesn't mess up any existing listing, doesn't need new
entries (will only clutter up the catalog) and we will still have a clue where
some heads belong to.

BL is a marketplace, not a history catalog database, there are other sites
for that. Doesn't mean we can't strive for better and more accurate data,
but common sense (with the word marketplace in the back of our heads) needs to
remain in place IMHO

Posting this on behalve of the many 'consumers' (customers) who might
not be aware there are new EU directives regarding distant selling.

The new directives can be found below, and each EU country is supposed to have
put this in a National Law (if not yet, probably soon).

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32011L0083&rid=1

Hi Eric,
as you have pointed out, each EU country has to implement it in national law(s)
and/or regulations.

Can you please elaborate which countries already have implemented this EU rule
from 2011?

EU directives are not binding for any individual, they are only binding for the
28 member states. So your post is somehow theoretical and academic.

As for BrickLink enforcing these national laws, do you expect BrickLink to hire
lawyers in each of the 28 EU member states to examine the national laws and then
checking payment terms of 8794 EU BrickLink stores?

BrickLink acts only as a venue and is not involved in transactions.
Check #3 of the TOS:
http://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1919

Upon registration all sellers have already agreed on #13 of the TOS to comply
with all applicable laws and regulations.

Now, if you want to complain about specific store terms *you* would have to show
proof
that the seller(s) in question violate the respective law(s) of the
seller's country for which you most likely would need an attorney.

Keep also in mind that payment transaction costs may not only include the PP
fees but also bookeeping costs. In case of an complaint it would be up to sellers
to show proof how their specific costs add up (if already regulated by local
laws).

For clarification:
I do not in any way want to defend sellers who charge more than the actual fees
but rather want to point out how difficult it is to judge about specific terms.
I have always tried to calculate most accurate fees, specified by buyer location
- which is not quite easy, as PP fees are calculated on the whole payment and
not only on order and shipping costs - but I'm fully aware about EU sellers
who charge a "flat" PP fee.

Btw. PP fees differ in different EU countries, for example German PP fees are
different than Dutch PP fees.

Ronald

Fully agree on some of the things you pointed out, and no BL cannot put a lawyer
in each country. But it can examine the store terms of sellers in case of complaints,
the PP tables are visible for them as well, and yes, I am aware German PP fees
differ from others. But that's beside the point, point is that each seller
would need to calculate for him(her)self, based on the country he(she)is located
(if that country already published the Law) and where the buyer is from.
In some contries there are already that law, and in others they will come soon,
as that is what the EU directive of mid 2014 expects (allthough indeed it was
already written in 2011): That seller can't charge more, he/she can charge
exact, or less, simple.

In regards to bookkeeping costs, yes, that could be part of a charge, but then
it cannot be called a 'PP' fee, or the seller can't either hind behind
it by saying: it's not just the PP fee, it also contains bookkeeping costs,
possible, but then the seller will need to call it differently
That BL requests from sellers to comply with local laws is clear, but when does
BL step in, in case of complaints? When does it remind sellers they need to?
As Lukas pointed out, they (the admins) ignored his request, and so the problem
persists...

+ seller's settings (if sellers charge PP, the fee is dynamically calculated
into the price depending on buyer's location).

Lucas, what is going to happen when BL implements autocheckout with autopayment
(march I believe). Do you really think they are going to create 5 different predetermined
boxes for extra fees that the seller can use to set fees? Doubtfull... Sellers
will need to predetermine their costs, add it in shipping and handling, period.
Buyers are getting used to the checkout and 'pay right away' method,
most sites work like that (Amazon, Ebay, to name a few), over and done with.
What a buyer wants, is to see full costs in advance (and I can tell from the
competition site), decides wether or not it is his budget, checks out and pays
and is done with it. That's the way it goes on the net.
Sellers who adopt to this method will have the advantage over those who don't,
sellers who charge (or add them in their shipping and handling) high fees will
be disadvantaged compared to their neighbour seller who doesn't, because
the buyers will have 2, 3 or more carts and they'll choose the seller
with the best overall deal. Pure and simple. What needs to change on BL is that
'inconsistancy' between sellers from all over the world and also the
mentality(*)of many sellers, particulary in the EU...
BO's owner understood, and his methods for building BO where with that idea.
You know what? It works

(*)signification:
Dear customers, it is a priveledge for you that you where able to visit my store
and fill your cart and checkout, however, just for doing so, I will charge you
PP fees, because I the seller, will not cover those for you, the heck I will
not and as a buyer you need to be reasonable and simply accept that fact, as
PP is not cheap (whining) and I want to make more money...
