While I do not condone his actions, they did spark action on securing the site,
which may not have happened otherwise.

And I think the point John was trying to make was, imagine how much worse it
could have been had they been more malicious. Do you have a recent backup of
your inventory? Imagine logging in tomorrow and your inventory being gone.
Or that all your prices were half of what they were today? Or even more subtle
changes, like random quantity adjustments.

But lets not forget, his actions were not entirely benign. There were changes
made to the catalog and other issues.

Troy

I'll agree on that.

But it was difficult getting email from BL members asking me what was wrong with
me and why was I doing this since he was posting as me. Little did they know
that when I figured out how to cut and paste I felt like a champion. Hack a site.
Huh?

And the forum was ablaze with comments to the then current owners instead of
directing their anger to the hacker. Without Eric straightening everything out
with me I would probably have never come back.

What should the users do? How do they get the owners to fix things? If you
have a better way let everyone know and then they can use that way to affect
change. You seem to forget how long this has been going on. What is the solution?
Is it to sit back and suck it up while things get worse? Instead of complaining
about complaining come up with a solution. Also find a solution to get that
COMMUNIST FLAG OFF MY SCREEN. And do not use the mantra "don't come here

BrickLink and wants it to continue, to be successful, and to be easy. Other
sites do it, why can that not be done here? I have never one since I started
using eBay has the site been down while I was using it and I just went over 8000
feedbacks on eBay. I have used Amazon for years and never a problem. But BrickLink
that was supposed to be working and fixed puts a Communist Flag on my screen
and that is not fixed. What are these people going to do if the site gets hacked
again? A hacker could erase all inventories, all history and find passwords

watch out.
John P

Just to be clear and not cause a panic for those unaware, Paypal is separate
from BL and there isn't anything related to Paypal stored within BL.

Pam

The last time BrickLink was hacked they looked at the id and pass words and went
into paypal and could get into user accounts that used the same passwords. That
is scarey.
John P

John, I honestly don't think that anything actually happened with anyone's
Paypal account. My BL account was one of the hacked accounts and there wasn't
any log in history related to BL on my Paypal account.

That being said, in this day and age with everything that's been in the media
about Target, etc., if anyone has the same ID and password for any account that's
just dumb.

Pam

The hacker admitted it on the forum and said that he just went into the paypal
accounts that had the same passwords and just looked around.
Thank goodness he was a nice hacker, will the next one be so nice?
John P

Yes, _____ was so nice. I'll remember to put him on my next party invitation

In the version of Chrome I'm using on some version of Windows there's
a settings box in the top right corner of the browser (it's 3 stacked horizontal
lines) and when you click it, it offers, among other options, the ability to
zoom in or out of a page. If I click down to 90%, I can see tabs in BL stores.

Thanks. That works as well.

So yeah, even big companies like LEGO screw up on testing before they roll something

Bricklink World Class Programming & Customer Serivce team -

Test before release. This concept is not hard. Perhaps in your eagerness to
pacify the crowd with pitchforks and torches you have forgotten it. Perhaps you
may just not know. Here is how you do it:

For EACH (individual) change to Bricklink:
-----------------------------------------
#1 - Scope your change to know its impact
#2 - Write your test plan to match the requirements for the change
#3 - Recognize that there are at least three (3) internet browsers to support:
Chrome, Firefox & Internet Explorer (IE)
#4 - Make sure that the test plan fails before any change is made
#5 - Implement the change, and only that change, in a development environment
#6 - Execute the test plan (in an isolated environement that matches the live
environment) for Chrome, Firefox and IE
#7 - Repeat steps 5-6 until the test plan passes for all three (3) browsers
#8* - Run the full test plan on the ENTIRE site to ensure everything still works
#9 - If anything fails, return to step #1 and repeat
#10 - Release the change to the live site.

(* Bricklink is written with ancient software that has so many dependencies,
querks, gotchas and 'hidden' features that it is impossible to know what
a change will do to seemingly unrelated features. That is why the software used
to run Bricklink is no longer used nor even supported, not even by the company
that originally created the software...)

Your new mantra must be: "test! Test! TEST! And then test it again!"

Any modern development team worth being paid - especially one that performs
web development - knows this.

and checkboxes, instead of always relying on store terms. I suggest that all
sellers fill out a form so that we can systematically store this information.

Right now, we already have this covered for a few items:
Countries I ship to
Minimum order
Accepted currencies
Accepted payment types

We should add more:
Minimum shipping
Additional fees
* Lot fee
* Small order fee
* Payment type fee
* Handling fee
* Other fees
Expected Dispatch time from date of payment
When I leave feedback
* On payment
* On shipping
* After "Received"
* Other
How I deal with order errors
* Ship correction at my cost
* Refund
* Buyer's Choice
* Other

These are the ones I can think of that could be useful. I am sure there are others,
but this would be a great start.

--
Marc.

I like the idea. However, how would you suggest handling the following. I charge
actual shipping plus $1. Another seller charges $2.93. So for 1-3 ounces we are
exactly the same. However, they get to check no additional fees even though they
actually do have an additional fee.

I'm not being critical, just asking.

Thanks.

At this day, only BAD behaviour is santioned (NSS, NPB's, site and forum

Please remove the reference and link to the MSRP price. This is a new feature
that many have questioned. Although I don't think anyone has made a formal
suggestion to remove it.

I do not think this helps sales on BrickLink. On the contrary, as Tracy and others
noted, listing an MSRP that is lower than what the item sells for on BrickLink
could very well be sending buyers elsewhere, turning them off to BrickLink or
discouraging them from ordering such items here on BrickLink.

When I shop for LEGO online or in the real world at Target, TRU, WalMart and
other places, I have never seen any of these retailers list a lower MSRP alongside
their own higher price. Why in the world would they? It might make sense when
their prices are far below the MSRP, but never when prices are higher than the
MSRP.

My apologies, but I just don't see the purpose of listing the MSRP as far
as sales are concerned. It might have some minor passing appeal as a mere historical
reference for long discontinued sets, but how exactly does it help sales when
currently available sets are often priced higher here on BrickLink? Unless the
purpose is to bring down those prices? IMO, any usefulness in listing the MSRP
as a mere reference is greatly outweighed by the potential negative affect on
sales, turning off of buyers, and creating disputes between buyers and sellers
as to why a seller is charging more than the MSRP.

Profit is not a sin. It makes commerce possible. And it makes buyers able to
easily get what they want.

Thor

This is certainly true. But superlots can be excluded in searches, right?
How about doing the same with extra fees?
Sellers have to select if they charge extra fees (and how much) in the same way
as they select payment options, minimum buy etc in their store settings.
Then the search engine could use that info to exclude or include stores with
extra fees at the buyers discretion.

This would also make the extra fees easier to find in the store terms. Sometimes
one has to read through a lot of fine print to find whether or not there are
any.

Personally I don't mind the extra fees as much as long as they are clearly
listed. I have found many stores that still have lower prices even if they charge
$1 or so for packing material or so. I'm more irked by stores that use a
1 size fits all shipping option, for example shipping everything via priority.
I have recently bought the 4 different Fantasy Era Dragons from 4 different sellers.
3 shipped regular 1st class mail and 4th shipped it with priority in a box that
was way too large (maybe the only box he had) and the cost was more than 3 times
higher than with the other orders.

Sylvia

Hi Sylvia,

Not a bad idea. I charge a flat $1 on top of actual mailing costs.

Now, what about a seller who starts their mailing costs at $2.69. That's
also a fee, just not labeled as such.

Pam

There are other ways to "manipulate" the price guide to attract busniess.

Another tactic is to price certain parts super low but then they are attached
to a superlot.

This is a popular tactic with the CMF. A few stores have the Zombie from series
1 priced the lowest in the catalog but then you look at the super lot for the
whole set and the others are jacked up. This also occurs with some other parts
that are sub parts of another part. All and all it is just a way to pull in
customers.

This happens in B&M stores with all kinds of sales and other tactics.

Comparative shopping is an art and any guidelines and rules that are laid down
by Bricklink Limited will be manipulated somehow or another.

You will still have to fill carts and compare total costs when buying multiple
parts, etc

including asking sellers for a quote on shipping (unless they go automated shipping)

to be 100% sure

Thanks,

For example : I would like to see when I placed a certain part into my inventory,
That makes it easier to find the part someone has orderd.

If you check "Retain" for items in your inventory when they reach zero, you will
still be able to see when you added those items to your inventory when someone
buys the entire lot.

Then, if you're really going crazy looking for a misplaced part, you can go to
My Store and click on Newest Items Added and go to the page with the correct
date of when you added that item. You can see what other items you added on the
same day and sometimes this helps.

If you forgot to do this, you can scroll over the part and get a lot number and
track it down that way by scrolling through pages to see what lots numbers were
on each day in numerical order.

I think this would be fairly easy to implement, with many benefits.

Please add to location at the top of store landing page (where the flags are)

Either or both. Town/City and/or post/zip code.

It would be nice to know where - in (my case) England - you are, and you me!

For example if it was urgent and you knew I was in Worthing, you being in Brighton
(15miles) - you could likely get parts the same day.
Or if it was a set it would save on shipping

I can't see any reason why not - PLEASE consider

Thank You
Graham

I honestly voted No. I have met up with a few locals to deliver parts. While
I can say that it was a pleasure to meet these people and I was not kept waiting;
it would have been more cost effective on my end to just mail the parts. Twenty
minutes each way and gas.

And, I would not want people coming to my home.

I would and do continue to deliver parts personally for those that I have already
met. But, unless the order contained sets which are more expensive to ship, I
wouldn't start it with any other buyers; and having a delivery fee is just downright
ridiculous.

  Hello,

This may exist, but after doing several searches in the Help menu with different
key words, concerning buyer reserved items, nothing comes up for the buyer. Any
reference is for "adding" reserved items.

It has been 100% consistent that new members can not find any instructional information
on where to find items reserved for them or how to add them to their order. I
have always had to send an email, after getting an inquiry, on how to find the
items I've reserved for them and how to add them to their order. I remember when
I was new and had the same issue, having to contact the seller on how to do it.

Can we add a Help page under "Buying" with header "How to purchase Items Reserved
for me" - or something to that effect.

thanks,

Judy

the way it works now is not quite intuitive for both buyer and seller side. i
had questions on 2 reserved items from buyers with 500+ feedback on how to find
their reserved items, so they have been quite here for a while

for the seller who want's to check if he has marked the items correctly for his
store a possibility to check it directly in the store would also be nice

Go to My Inventory. Right-hand side. Reserved for private sale. This will show
if you have any items reserved.

Pam

hi pam,

yes i know this already

it's rather about checking it from the buyers perspective through the store,
so if my settings in the inventory are reflected correctly in my store

regards

Carsten

Sorry, I misunderstood. Need more coffee!

I have come to disagree with this. All of the issues you raise can be overcome.
Although I used to feel the same way that you do, for the same reasons, I don't
anymore. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes to implement this
a system like this on BrickLink.

What about a seller just starting out. My household tends to order a lot of
things online and as a result we save and stack the good different size boxes.
I purchased new different size bubble mailers but to have to have a "standard"
size box that complies with weights given would discourage me. Since most of
my orders are not that large to not reuse a box I already have, (if it's the
right size and not exceedingly heavy) would just cost me more. For example,
it was much cheaper for my last buyer, for me to go and find a used box for priority
mail, since it was too large for a small flat rate and really not big enough
for the medium. It only ended up costing him $.20 over the small flat rate.
And honestly, in most quantities boxes are expensive. You would probably have
to team up with another seller and try and split a larger order of boxes.

You (the seller) could either not opt-in to the Full Invoice method, or you can
simply set up your criteria to take into account the "worst case scenario" (or
as close to it as you're willing to risk) for the weight/size of the packaging.
AND/OR, the buyer can opt-out of the Full Invoice method at check-out, and ask
for a personalized shipping quote.

Marc.

Sounds good--everyone's happy and has an option. And I'm sure that once I gain
experience I would probably opt-in eventually. Thanks for the clarification.

Marc.

But who is going to collect all the necessary data? Not just the shipping weights
and volumes of all the parts and sets etc., but also those of packing materials.
Then there are the 684 (give or take a few) national postal services and parcel
services like FedEx, each with their own rules and price standards. Sometimes
I can ship a set in a pre-used box, sometimes I will have to buy a new box to
ship it. How to account for that? And my bubble mailers might be cheaper than
yours....

So, taken all that into account, we need to collect a gazillion data entries.
Who is going to collect those? And who is going to check them for accuracy? And
who is going to write the software to implement this into Bricklink? Will this
person or company get paid for their work? And by whom? Bricklink? Does Bricklink.com
think that this would give them a good return on the investment? I sincerely
doubt it.

I think that a lot of new sellers would benefit from a FAQ type hint page:

The recent post about a cape being shipped assembled is a great example.

Think how nice a HELP - Seller's Tips page would be.

example

B. SHIPPING
Minifigs
i. New minifigures can be assembled or unassembled, consider asking your customer
how they would prefer to receive the item, or include this as a note in your
listing.
ii. Capes should never be shipped on the minifigure, keep the cape separate
and use something to keep it flat.
iii. Parts shipped in bubble envelopes are liable to be crushed, consider a
bottle cap as great shield to send small parts (nod to Darth Smithy for this
tip).
iv. Helmets in particular are easily crushed, consider putting a minifig head
inside (we all have faded happy faces that are begging to be useful)

....

This could be developed my a volunteer, or... maybe Wiki technology could be
incorporated.

Sections on listings, shipping, customer communication, etc..

All with the BIG WARNING -- this is a non-monitored section -- BL assumes no
responsibility for its accuracy. Use at your own risk.

GOOD SELLERS MAKE HAPPY BL CUSTOMERS ... GOOD FOR EVERYONE.

As a new seller; I would definitely make use of this. I have already used many
of the shipping tips like the bottle cap; along with others that have been talked
about. Pam
