And just to be clear, I am serious in buying out the shop at 95% discount. So
OP should better "get ready!" for my order on March 21 at 2:01AM (and
there will also not be any ambiguity about what constitutes 2:15AM as both OP
and BL are in the same time zone).

BTW, I didn’t caught it before but March 21 is a Thursday.  And DST starts/stops
on Sundays.  So, I just checked and it’s this Sunday, March 10, that most Canadians
enter DST.

I was so disappointed to log in after a few years away that bricklink had deleted

I am pretty sure that if you do not log into your account for a year, then your
store inventory gets removed.

No, that isn't the case. APO/FPO addresses can receive international shipments,
but they *do* have go through USPS. But that is typical for international mail
- the national postal service makes delivery after the package goes through customs.

USPS does not operate in Italy, does it?

It does not, but that is not the point. We have shipped to APO/FPO as well. There
is no USPS here, but when shipment reaches US, it is handed over to USPS. So
OP needed to use a shipping service that does the same.

  Nubs_Select talked about this.

It's a bug I see since the Refund page exists.

When you've input any amount in the "Refund amount Buyer will receive"
field, then using your mouse to scroll either up or down will increase or
decrease the value by increment of 1 (ex: 12.37 = 13.37, 14.37, etc)

Which can also lead to negative numbers.

But a few times I was to validate a refund which in the end was 1 or 3€ more
than what I typed because of this. Of course it's more difficult to notice
if you've a non trivial number like 12.37 which can become 13.37 without
you to notice.

In short, after clicking "Review refund" CAREFULLY double check the amount,
it may have changed since you typed it

Note it's the same in a Shop page, you may type 4, scoll down, and buy 2...

... But... When I tried to replicate this after Nubs mentioned it above, I
scrolled up, down, left, right, expanded, contracted... nothing changed.

Depends the position of your cursor, the rotation speed or start time, many things...

Here I can make it happen 100% of the times.

Confirmed to happen here on Firefox and Nubs on Opera IIRC - at least, didn't
try other browsers.

The behavior of the mouse scroll wheel updating the contents of a "number"
input field is the default behavior on most browsers. This can be disabled with
a small tidbit of JavaScript (you can disable events generated by the scroll
wheel with a "blur()" override).

For devs: please let me know if you need more specific info.

Works fine and fixes it as far as I can tell.

I can't help but think someone at BL was a bit overzealous. With the merging
changes, the advice from BL was to put some text in the "description"
field to specify mold differences. Maybe this was construed as "now everything
needs a description", so the API was changed to now require a "description"
field...

As most all of the long(er)time sellers can attest, historically, prices of parts
have gone down and down. There are precious few parts where prices have stayed
steady or have gone up. This last phenomenon mostly happens for parts unique

They could do a database back-up before this all occurs and have the information
stored somewhere, but not being able to publicly access that information means
that it is basically useless and non-existent.

Info such as catalog contributors, dates of changes, item logs etc are only available
in BL's own databases. However, the bare info of what parts make up a minifig
or a set are contained in the nightly database builds for BrickStock / BrickStore.
It would only take a bit of tinkering and programming to use an older copy of
these database files to resurrect the state of inventories at some point in time.

I will let it be this time.

If there’s taxes and BL should have collected them, it’s not your choice: it’s
tax evasion.
See: https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1401495

And if there’s no taxes, as the order is not in the Paid status, I think you
should be able to change the payment method or the status, maybe by editing the
invoice or something (don’t know, not a seller ).

The right thing here would be a video, for first time buyers. I see this often,
that people do not know how to do this and that.
We should have a video on YouTube, that could share to new buyers.

If you are required to let BL handle taxes, you want to prevent people from making
payments "the old-fashioned way":

- Make sure the email address you have with Paypal for deposits is different
from your BL email address (so people can't easily "guess" where
they send a manual payment to);
- Don't advertise that email address in any BL invoicing you send out.

This way, at least you prevent people from skipping the online PP option.

The left column is supposed to be a list of the tags. On my browser (Firefox

For the tech people -

This is because the tag delimiters are not "HTML-escaped" - they should
be written out as "& lt ;" and "& gt ;" in the page to prevent
them from being interpreted as HTML code by the browser.

As most of us, we have changed our password during the log-in process. We also
appreciate the email sent when a "new" device logs in.

However, I believe BL would need to take a look at how the site remembers a previously-authenticated
browser. After changing the password o on our account from my laptop, I refreshed
the BL page on my tablet, and it authenticated without asking for our new password.
I have to assume this is because of some cookies stored on my tablet.

Changing an account's password does not invalidate sessions which were authenticated
with the old password. It would be good to put in some logic that would kick
off these "old" sessions.

As a seller, what measures will you take as a response of what we, as a community,
just experienced?

Safety measures, diversification of selling platforms, inventory backups, contingency
plans, etc...

I was reading the FB sellers group, and there were quite a few shops relying
on the "remarks" field, as well as many shops without any regular backup
of their inventory. Several of these commenters also said their livelihood depended
on BL for a significant part of their income.

There was a discussion a while ago where inventory storage was discussed - using
"remarks" or using "category naming":

https://www.bricklink.com/messageThread.asp?ID=285809&nID=1259033

Some language was used (stores being "nuts" to use inventory storage
based on the catalog, and using that system "is trouble" that was a
bit harsh because clearly storing based on the "remarks" field is far
superior. Well, as I mentioned in that thread, each store has its preference,
but I also mentioned (and this is a literal quote): "If for whatever
reason that field goes belly-up, you are in deep doodoo, whereas catalog-based-sorted
stores can still easily find any part". I could not help but notice how relevant
that post was when reading the FB posts. Our shop (aside from obviously not getting
any new orders) had no issue whatsoever managing our inventory, and pulling existing
orders.

I am grateful that BL came back in one piece, and I am happy for all shops that
(apparently) the remarks fields survived. I also mentioned in that thread, when
using the "remarks" field to manage your inventory, how important it
is to have a good (and verified working) backup. Now that everyone can wash their
soiled underpants and rejoice at seeing the remarks, are we actually going to
at least do sensible backups?

I will try to explain once (but you just don't seem to understand what others
have been saying again and again) -

Every shop can set their prices to whatever they like. There is no issue at all
with any prices you set on your items.

The issue is with calling the same prices you use ALL THE TIME as being a sale.
If you sell items for the same price ALL THE TIME, it is NOT a sale. These would
be your normal prices.

In EVERY "SALE" you advertise you set the exact same discounts on your
items. These "sales" apparently never end. A sale is a temporary reduction
in prices on your goods.

Again, you can set your prices to whatever you like, nobody has any issue
with that. The issue is calling your every-day-prices a sale. It is NOT
a sale if your items are still priced to whatever they are ALWAYS priced.

Your shop gets advertised on the BrickLink main page under "store sales"
whenever you put out these forum messages. This is just false advertising. These
are NOT sales. BL should look into stopping these front-page advertisements for
bogus sales.

Seeing repeated messages in the forum about not receiving emails from BrickLink,
I did some checking.

The DNS for bricklink.com shows an SPF record like this (broken up for readability):

v=spf1
- include:spf.protection.outlook.com
- ip4:54.209.67.9
- ip4:18.210.58.96
- ip4:3.213.113.25
- -all

This tells the world that emails sent from the bricklink.com email domain should
only be sent out from "anything spf.protection.outlook.com" (these
are Microsoft servers), or IP addresses 54.209.67.9, 18.210.58.96 and 3.213.113.25.
Furthermore, there is a DMARC entry set that explicitly tells the world to reject
any email that doesn't pass the SPF record (and possibly any DKIM - I haven't
checked those - yes, I am lazy).

I checked my mail server, and at least the last 4 days, any email sent from BL
to us was sent from IP address 54.208.31.131 . This address is not
on the SPF record, so the current setup basically says to the world "please
reject BL emails from blsmtp.bricklink.com".

Fortunately (for quite a few BL users) many email servers don't yet follow
these directions, and accept BL email coming from a non-conformant address.

BL should at least include 54.208.31.131 in their SPF record, and possibly check
DKIM.

I would like to work with the assumption that certain values are essentially
primary keys. category IDs, color IDs, really anything named xxxx ID. It seems
to me that the nomenclature in use implies that anything called 'id'
is immutable while anything else is fair game for modification during catalog
updates.

There are precious few fields that can be considered a primary key. Part numbers
can (and do) change, people's login name can (and do) change. There is no
way for us mere mortals to access the actual primary key info for these entities.

If you are considering keeping things like parts history, be prepared to either
set up some links from old part IDs to new part IDs, or update your old data
with new IDs (finding out what the new part ID is when you only have the old
part ID is fun - what is the new part ID of "372"? - most times, the
old ID is kept as an alternative on the site, so you can search for it, but not
from the API). Some parts keep flip-flopping IDs (like 6093/x104, 41669/x346
etc).

Some things that do stay the same are order numbers, color IDs, lot IDs.

Enjoy!

In Suggestions, qwertyboy writes:
For a second time in two days, a quote which we replied to was automatically
canceled because an item was bought by another customer. This has left us with
very upset customers.

While I understand these quotes are no longer valid, having them canceled automatically
without any explanation (especially to the customer) is unacceptable. If
the system is able to cancel quotes for this reason, the system should at least
send a simple email to the parties involved.

As well, currently there is no way of telling why quotes were canceled. You cannot
even tell if the customer decided to cancel, and you cannot easily tell if the
system auto-canceled by comparing quote change and order creation times, as cancellation
appears to happen "some time" within an hour of order placement.

So my suggestion is twofold:

- Send both buyer and seller an email whenever a quote gets canceled and put
the cancel "trigger" in the message (like either "canceled by buyer" or "canceled
by system because item xxxx is no longer available";
- Record the reason for cancellation in the quote request, so this is available
for future reference.

Bumping this suggestion, as customers keep getting confused and upset about quotes
being canceled without any explanation.

Please consider sending a simple message to both seller and buyer when the system
decides to cancel a quote for this reason. It has been nearly 8 years since the
original suggestion. This should not be rocket science.

Thanks.

Talking about too-lengthy posts, two that stood out fairly recently was a post
with what looked like the entire BL catalog, and a post that felt it necessary
to regurgitate Pi to 100,000 decimals.

Both are still accessible.

I started on BL, but it looks like anything that was a response to an order (such
as if I used the "message" link in the order itself) may purge along
with the order. Is this what's happening?

I double checked that recent messages that were sent this way show properly in
the outbox in the messages right now, and also show on the order itself. Does
this mean that in theory we shouldn't be using the "message" feature
in orders to keep a longer history in the messages?

Thanks!

I would be interested to know if adding a NEW Message attached to an old order
will prevent the entire order from being purged. Will a new message re-set the
clock on that order?

This I can say is not the case. We allow customers to keep their order open,
but on one occasion the order got purged at the expected date even after sending
the customer a message through the order form.

What could be the reason? And what does "temporary ban" mean?

Aren't all BL sales to/from Russia prohibited due to the war in Ukraine?

I presume that once hostilities cease trade will resume.

But it could be for other reasons.

That's right, support answered me the same way. HOWEVER! Before that, there
was access to the store and inventory, but it was impossible to accept and leave
orders. Ban now.

You were advertising on your store that you were accepting orders by people sending
you a snapshot of their order. This not only tries to circumvent the ban-on-sales,
but promotes sales facilitated by BL but transacting outside BL, a violation
of the Terms of Service.

So take your pick, either one would likely be sufficient for a ban.

It is like saying "oh, I always run this red light, and nobody has said anything
yet, so it is OK".

Not saying an external splash page is like running a red light, I'm saying
that "haven't been caught yet" is not the same as "therefore
it is allowed".

Also not saying that an external splash page is not allowed - it apparently is
(as is somewhat evident by the option being available on the management page).

All I am saying is that to me there is a contradiction with the ToS. It either
needs an adjustment, or some clarification from our overlord.

I'm sorry, I can't be any clearer than this.

I am just quoting the ToS which we all agreed on. If an external page is allowed
without any permission, BL should make this more clear.

It sounds from your interpretation that a hosted splash page becomes "the
splash page" - so what would the phrase "users must not link from their
splash page ... to another site" mean? No links to pages outside the splash
page site?

Or: no links to pages outside BL = your splash page must link to BL only, even
when hosted elsewhere (except maybe images?).

That would mean no links to CSS file(s) (and - haven't tried this - JavaScript...)
either, so only inline CSS allowed.

Complicated.  Happy not to be a seller

Or don't do it externally, you can do enough on the locally hosted page.

Or better yet, just forget about the splash page. The only info that really matters
to a customer should be in the shop terms.

In Off Topic, s0l0kr writes:
Yeah but you don't cry that bricklink is low profitable That's the
difference

Just to make sure - nobody is crying that BL is low profitable. Speaking for
myself -

You started this thread asking anyone to explain how the Swan model works, because
"... sometimes university needs to much". You also mentioned you wanted
to use your BL shop to augment your income. I advised you several times that
running a small BL shop to get money in is a very bad way of spending your time.
I don't think anyone else in this thread is going to dispute that.

I will try one last time:
- For your study, you need to put time and effort in, asking for shortcuts is
lazy.
- You believe university is claiming too much time, and you think/hope
you can earn enough money with your BL shop - these two things are incompatible
doing at the same time. Both take a lot of time to achieve.

So, I believe you need to make a choice: go study and pick a more profitable
way of augmenting your income, or build your BL store to the point where it can
make money. IMHO you cannot do both at the same time. What you can do (and nobody
is disputing this) is to have a small shop on the side while studying, but there
is simply no way you can rely on its profitability to pay for your lifestyle
while at the same time doing a fulltime university study. Your shop is not large
enough to provide that.

So I am going to change my advice (assuming you continue your study): spend your
time with your books, keep your BL shop for fun (and not rely on it for income),
and look for other, more realistic, ways of augmenting your income.

Apparently your studies haven't reached the point yet where profit is not
just the difference between buy-price and sell-price. Our shop mostly sells used
parts. If I were to define my profit as just that difference, it would be over
90%. Think that sounds great? I did not mention the time it takes to get
from a bulk eBay buy to having it in the shop. Hunting for Lego to buy, cleaning
it, sorting (and discarding any non-Lego), uploading to BL and storing it away.
For our shop, this is a 60-hour-a-week job, and the profits are less than what
I would make with literally any other job (paper route, dish washing at
restaurants, you name it). You need to build a large shop for it to become profitable.

To simplify things, if you can't hire someone and pay at least minimum wage
to do what you do in your BL shop, you are not profitable.

You need to determine your priorities. If you wish to pay for and finish your
studies, stop with your BL shop, as the "money earned" divided by "time
spent" is about as bad as you can get. Find a different way to augment your
income.

In that case, I will give you some brutal honest advice. Stop selling Lego on
BrickLink now, and get a different side job. BL will not give you anywhere the
ROI that you need. It takes way too much time (time you need for your studies)
for peanuts of profit. As you apparently study economics, apply your knowledge
to your own activities and start maximizing the money you make per each hour

Sometimes youngsters are too lazy to put in the work needed. If you think university
studies is "too much", wait until real life catches up with you. You
will realize university is a walk in the park (and yes, I did all the studying
pre-Internet in the 80s, and have finished university).

Buck up and start reading your books like everyone else.

why the concern to "be kind" is needed.

Is "being kind" the same as "not giving an honest answer"? As
long as the answers are not rude (which is the point of almost all replies),
I don't see a need for anyone to respond in a different way.

Sounds an aweful lot like buying a lottery ticket. My CFO does that regularly.
For me it's a win-win - if she doesn't score the jackpot I get to say

Just some friendly advice -

Most people who read the forum, read it regularly. Advertising the same "15%
sale" every day will not get you more orders,. Rather, it looks silly,
and you will actually lower the number of people reading your "sale"
message.

I suggest you put your non-sale prices at that 15%-off, and then doing an actual
sale every now and then (not every day).

$100-150 cad but they wanted soemthing about $350-400 (forgot the exact amount
but can verify it if you want).

To be fair, Canada Post does the exact same thing - if you create a domestic
shipping label for a parcel, at the bottom in small letters it reads that upon
non-delivery they will return the parcel at counter rates.

Niek.

They may do the exact same thing but it is not the exact same thing happening
to us:
1) I ship for $20 with CanadaPost. It gets returned for $25. Ok, no problem.
2) I ship with UPS, using my own account. It does not leave the country (i.e.
Canada if I ship it myself). The package gets returned to the address of sender
at no extra cost.
3) I ship with UPS, using my own account. It reaches the other country but the
package does not get delivered. I don't know how this gets handled by UPS.
Do they charge to return it?
4) I ship with UPS, with NetParcel, for $70. It reaches the other country
but the package does not get delivered. They ask $400 to return it. This is why
I think you should know if you use NetParcel.

I was referring to the carrier charging for return delivery (so in effect point
3 of your reply), plus the fact CP charges counter rates. I don't know what
the UPS counter rate would be for shipping back from your customer's country,
but (supposedly, if I believe the NetParcel site) my price for some US-bound
shipments with UPS is CAD 11, and the "normal" rate is CAD 45+, so the
difference of your account rate of CAD 70 vs a counter rate of CAD 400 is in
the same silly ballpark.

Off-topic - CP is adding more and more costs to their parcel shipments, so prices
keep going up. Not so for their flat-rate boxes. At this point, pretty much all
domestic parcels for us are cheaper in a FRB than with a "normal" parcel,
even with our business account (but I'm sure your sets won't fit any
FRB they have).

Ah - that pic was from the chicken curry spread. The prep for the nasi goreng
meal (Indonesian for "rice fried" consisted of marinating chicken and
cooking rice. The marinating in advance is obvious, the rice cooking is needed
because for a proper fried rice the rice must be cooked and then completely cooled

Interested to hear what others are doing besides working with the plastic brick
and reading the forum (yes, I see you do).

I prepped tonight's dinner (nasi goreng with chicken satays), made a batch
of chicken curry salad (which sounds way healthier than it is - "chicken
curry spread" would probably be a better term), now doing some home cleaning.
I was hoping to take a brisk walk outside, but it looks like there is still too
much ice on the sidewalks, and I can't risk toppling over again after two
back surgeries (if that wouldn't have killed me, my wife would have finished
the job).

There is no ban (yet), the store is closed because of "Preventive Action".

If I were to go out on the street and start claiming I broke into my neighbor's
house, you bet the police would be interested to have a chat with me. I won't
get sentenced right away (in this case, banned from BL), but they sure would
want to get to the bottom of this while they invite me to have a little stay
at the police station (preventive action).

So yes, if someone claims they bought the store from a previous owner, this would
(in my eyes) very much warrant a temporary store closure until this is sorted
out.

No. I would STRONGLY suggest to follow the advice Admin_Russell has given

Yup - we have that set to CAD 0.49 (which matches the base fee Paypal charges,
so in revenue it doesn't matter anymore whether they place an order in one

Stats and graphs are cool. If enough data and some smart reporting, you can actually
distill some useful information to further your take-over of the plastic brick
market (not so much with the top-20-or-so customers, but with stuff like sales
per item ("what are best-selling items in my shop setup", turn-over
speed per item ("hm - I should really up the pricing on that item" etc.

Anywho, below is our top-20 customers for BrickLink and a top-20 customers for
all market places combined. Note that there are discrepancies in the reported
orders on BrickLink and the ones across all market places. This is because the
BL API only returns the customer's login name (which can change over time),
and not the customer's BL ID.

I am only able to view the first screen full of items (max 100 items). When I

(showing all of the selection options) not to the next group of items. Is this
a known bug?

Don't know if it is new or not, but this is confirmed on our end.

Yup, something is afoot. Through the API I received a message that we received
order:

- 21378384

But I can't download it now, nor do I see it in the orders overview on the
site.

Any reason for the price? I suspect something like the dark purple motorcycle
helmet and air tanks happened to this. Please explain if you do know.

Btw, I did sell one of these last year.

The price is about 15% higher compared to what it was in 2019 (sold 2 then),
so not a shocking price increase.

Actually, there were 538 lines in my order. Sometimes, in other orders I did
(just a few so far...), identical items were split into several lots, but I didn't
care because there was no fee per lot. In this problematic case (again, because
of my lack of experience...), I thought that the fee would apply on each lot
(74) and not on each line (538). I was not able to imagine that a seller could
be so unhonest that he would split 100 identical items into 100 different lots...
My bad!

While I don't agree with these types of selling practices, technically the
seller did what was advertised in his terms. A single line in your item represents
a lot. It doesn't matter whether several lines in your order are for the
same type of item (itemID+color+condition), you have ordered 538 lots. Their
terms say they charge EUR 0.25 per lot, so you got charged an additional EUR
134.50.

Again, not saying I condone these "EUR 0.25 per lot" practices. I firmly
believe sellers should charge the prices (which is the result of amount times
the list price) plus a shipping fee, and not tack on any additional nonsense
fees (if sellers believe they get short-changed with such a setup, they should
increase their item pricing). But technically, the seller charged you what is
in their terms (however stupid they are). You agreed to the order terms, this
is a valid order. I can't see BL intervening with this particular order.
I can (and hope to) see BL taking action to stop these silly terms going forward.

Hi. This is meant to be like a game, or like for fun. So if the amount of
your feedback numbers would have a personal meaning in your life, would the number
be closer to a. your age b. your shoe size c. your rent d. the amount of the
children you have e. the price of car/bike f. your salary g. number of movies
you have at home h. number of tries to get a job or i. something other, then
what? I hope at least 1 person could answer, thanks. Mine is closer to my shoe
size and less than my age.

It turns out our FB number is about 0.25% off from the distance in kms from where
I was born to where I live now.

This got X-rated pretty quick. Keep things decent people.

The word "satisfy" does not have a sexual connotation in American English.

Unfortunately we can't tell that to John Belushi anymore:

Anywho, my post was a poor attempt at some humor. My apologies if I offended
