| | It was changed some years ago now, as they came with new sets and these are not
strictly extras, they are unused. When you sell a used set you do not need to
include them (only the parts necessary to build the set). But it is a good idea
to indicate that they are not included if you sell a used set.
|
How would a buyer know that these parts do not belong to a complete used
set?
If I was a buyer, I would check the received parts of a used set that I bought
on BrickLink against the Regular Items list of that set at BrickLink. And then
the trouble begins...

Certain sets only use one or two of the plume feathers from that wheel. But even
if only one is used, the other two are also listed on the regular items.
On this page https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=1562#regularItems in the
section "Additional Information About Regular Items" it says:
Parts on Sprues - Complete sprues are included in this section unless some
parts from the sprues are used in minifigures. In that case, the parts from the
sprues that are not used in minifigures are included in this section.
Now my question is: Why?
Example given: https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemInv.asp?S=6274-1
and are not used anywhere on the Caribbean Clipper. There
is no official parts list of this set. But still both pieces are listed as Regular
Items on BrickLink. In this particular case the price for the complete set is
increased by approximately $10 just because these two unused parts are listed
as regular parts.
I suggest to change the Brickink definition of regular items and move those parts
from Regular Items to Extra Items.

No: there probably are reasons for those lots, including you making a typo or
an error at one moment. But of course, nobody can't remember having made
this kind of mistake (otherwise you'd have corrected it).

I noticed it randomly while working on my inventory.

Chances are 99.99999% either normal BrickLink behaviour (instant check out, OCR,
OIR...) or your errors.
Take some time to set up adequate procedures to verify, if not, it simply didn't
happen.

Hello Sylvain and thanks for your so very useful message, as usual...!
I don't get why you wrote this, please explain ?
|
All the explanations are in my previous posts but maybe you didn’t have time
to read them thoroughly, so here’s an executive summary:
— That part only had its name and ID changed, there was no merge.
— Name and/or ID changes happen every week, they never created problems with
stores’ inventories. Certainly not changing colours AND prices.
— You’re the only one having a problem with this part¹.
— Memory isn’t a sufficient proof².
¹ In your first post, you asked if someone else had errors: no one has. The
only people who went your way are StarBrick and Randyf. In two very different
manners:
— StarBrick blamed a merge that didn’t happen. Nothing happened with their inventory.
— Randyf moaned the lack of changelogs on BL. Nothing happened with their inventory.
² See below.
| To me, it feels to me you're just saying I lied. […]
|
I didn’t say you lied, I said you haven’t enough reasons to blame BL.
Regarding this kind of problems, the only fault BL has is that there’s no changelogs
and you need to keep them yourself if you want traces.
But then, if your first and only reaction is to blame BL, BL-generated changelogs
won’t be proof to you. So, as 1001bricks said, external proofs are a necessity.
And that’s all Sylvain and I are saying: ²you need proofs. If inventory changes
happen and hamper your business, you take the time to make changelogs by downloading
your inventory regularly and noting the changes you make. Then, you’ll be able
to back your memory with data and you’ll be able to blame BL. Otherwise, as
there’s no changelogs on BL, there’s nothing to work on, there’s nothing to investigate.

There hasn't been a major issue or there would be a mutiny here on the Forum.
I know it's frustrating to deal with errors in your inventory, but consider
the bigger picture. There are 4,800 Dark Brown 3062 for sale on the site, but
the only problem was with your shop? The number and name were updated on Feb
1. No items were merged.
Take a breath and check your info again. I do hope you find the issue!

And how could you be sure that BL verification tool is exact, if you already

Because you've got 2 different data that should show the same state at a
given moment.
Like "This lot exists on BL today", but I can check on my files I never
had it in stock, I never uploaded it, and it's not a renamed or merged lot,
neither an order or item cancellation.
OK, forget it, I give up.
Just say it's a BrickLink problem - which is possible and FAR easier.

That’s not what Sylvain said.
He said that if you don’t have proofs it’s BL, then your complaints are moot.
It’s like realizing one aisle of your grocery store is totally empty and blaming
it on magical gremlins coming to eat things at night.
Come to think of it, it’s how the theory of spontaneous generation came about.
Look it out and how it was debunked. Spoiler: it’s about proofs and science,
not magic.

Do you really say that this is what's required to maintain a correct inventory

That's the equivalent of checking every aisle in a grocery store after closing

Every day.

3062b wasn’t merged. It was renamed (removing the ‘open stud’) and re-IDed to
3062. 3062a still exists:

So until then, it's probably not a BrickLink problem.
Or you have some versions associated with an impossible color (like old
part with a new color), hence the color change.
That's one of the versions problems; many lots for sale are just either lies,
mistakes or typos

| Another option is to create a rebrickable.com account. Upload your inventory
to rebrickable. Find the set and it will show you the parts you have and those
that you need. You can also create lists of bricks that may not be in your bricklink
inventory.

It's NOT the easiest.
https://www.brickstore.dev/ makes it far easier.
A few clicks to find which parts are in your shop and (if you wish) remove them
from your shop, which is impossible with a wanted-list.

I guess this is the issue of having obviously not minifigures in the minifigures
category. Small animal characters like Scooby Doo or big ones like Smaug go in
animals, so it seems odd to put vehicle based characters in minifigs and not
in the existing vehicle category. If this is going ahead, presumably Ent / Treebeard

Most sales of variants are driven by the inventories, which in turn populate
buyer want lists. If the variants aren't going to be in the inventories,
there is no point in differentiating them.
I'll keep what I currently have separated and try to send the same variant
for an order, but once I run out that's it. My shop is small and I cannot
charge the premium prices needed to justify the additional labor of continuing
to sort these to service for the vintage collector/restorer market.

Yes, I do plan on listing the different molds whenever possible. However, I am
already in the habit of distinguishing between many variants in my Comments.
It's not a great system though and requires a significant amount of extra
work on my part. I wouldn't think it is a viable option for any other than
specialty or hobby shops like mine. It's a nightmare to check inventory
when you have multiple lots per part. I have to label everything and note how
many total lots I have so I don't mess up and grab the wrong lot when pulling
orders.
I also distinguish between 'good' used and play wear. So, I end up with
many lots for vintage parts. I would bet it is actually quite off-putting to
those trying to fill out wanted lists. I constantly worry that the Easy Buy system
is bringing buyers to my shop without reading the Comments before placing an
order.
Thanks,
~Jen

| | Those are good arguments against doing it.
|
There are good arguments on both sides. For example, the fact that in LEGO doesn't
distinguish some mould variants is a good argument why BL doesn't need to.
But then there are cases where LEGO does distinguish and BL aggregates them under
a single number plus letter for the variant.
It could be complicated where BL has used single entries for parts when LEGO
has used multiple. For example, I wonder what will happen in the longer term
to parts like this.
where they have different BL code numbers and
where they use the same number but variant letters, even though LEGO has used
a range of different item numbers for the d variant. Should the latter be merged
or should they be split into different part numbers? Should the different d variants
have multiple entries even though they appear to be the same thing. It seems
strange that these two types of clip are treated in a very different way, one
keeping two distinct codes, the other aggregating them into one but using made
up code letters to distinguish them.
If the image comparing 4085 variants is removed, and there is just one 4085 entry

3001 from the late 70s onwards to complete a 1982 set or a 2024 set because the
inventory says so, why not use any 1x1 clip with vertical grip because the inventory
also says so. Does it really matter that one person (often later) said that they
found a particular variant in their set, so everyone else's set should be
the same if it is to be the real thing and allowed to be sold here. Of course,
it may well be true that they found that exact part in a sealed set that cost
them $100s, but should that impact on everyone else if they want to sell a used
set.

No but for the first few months I will keep them separated so that where possible
I can pick a buyers order with all the same type. Once I feel more confident
that the buying community has become accustomed to the fact that they could receive
either variant within the same order batch I may then start to merge my stocks

No. I think such comments might confuse and possibly put off some buyers. The
a, b, c type variants only really exist because they were catalogued here. If
they are no longer catalogued here then adding a comment that you will get a
'b' variant will be lost on many buyers and may leave them wondering
what they will get. It really depends on which images are retained to show the
part once merged. Where vintage parts come from known sets, I think I will comment
as i do now on the date range or the set they came from, if those parts attract
a premium price.
|
Those are good arguments against doing it.

Post an image of the flag, front and back, in Catalog Identification. Maybe you
have a different flag than the one you think you have.
To check it's size properly in studs, for measuring it, simply place it on
a LEGO baseplate and photograph it.
It's pretty easy to properly identify it and validate that it's a genuine
LEGO element.

That looks like yellowing due to age or interaction with chemicals present in
the environment. Unfortunately I don't know how you would clean that, but
perhaps someone on the forums will see this post and help you out with some information.
It might also be the lighting has an effect on the colors picked up in the flag.
For future reference it's easy to add parts using the "Add macro"
button when editing your post, the part above would look like the below macro
I've added to this post, reply to this and look at how the forum software
inserts it to get a better understanding. For best results, use the "Add

color information stops the error you will get when trying to add parts without
using the "Add macro" button:

Right, I'm aware of the other sets in that theme, but that doesn't really

It can be listed as complete per definition of used complete set:
Complete - Set contains all parts necessary to build all of the models
(including alternate models) in the instructions but does not have to contain
the original box/packaging and/or extra parts. If the set is missing instructions,
the description must list this. If the set did not come with instructions then
the set should include all parts listed in the picture inventory which is located
on the box or bucket. The set must include all original stickers used on the
model either still on the sticker sheet or applied.

This definition does not say "Set contains all parts in the regular
or alternate section".
If the plumes in a castle set are not used in any alternate model, the set can
be listed complete without them.

It is used in a minifigure:
Use the “break minifigure” option to show parts that are used in minifigures
to the inventory.
Now, for the usual question of why the other plumes are in Regular while they
are not used to build the set:
The plumes came together on a sprue:
so the sprue should be in Regular.
But as one is already in a minifigure, the sprue is broken and two remaining
plumes go to Regular too.

“Counterpart,” not “Alternate”
Rebrickable (wrongly) has the base in White (and I don’t think they do assemblies/counterparts
there).
Brickset (which has this inventory from LEGO) has it in Black, like BL.
I think this is just that OP stumbled upon an inventory with errors on Rebrickable.
They have a forum there too where I guess this can be discussed.

I've seen cases where the part is missing completely from Rebrickable.
Also, Rebrickable now shows the extra parts (which Lego catalogs never do).

They are not from the same source.
Inventories on Rebrickable are taken directly from LEGO, which means they contain
the inventory as reported by LEGO, which may not be the same as was actually
shipped out and which does not cater for all variants that Bricklink distinguishes
(but may distinguish variants that are considered as the same on Bricklink).
Inventories on Bricklink are (nowadays) pre-filled from the same source of LEGO,
but are always manually checked and verified against what was actually packed.
The Bricklink inventories are also amended by distinguishing variants, counting
the extras (like most small parts), alternates (like different variants) and
counterparts (like stickers applied on parts, or wheel-tire assemblies).
Also, please keep in mind that although LEGO's part numbers (design ids)
are used on multiple platforms, the numbering of variants and decorated parts
may differ from platform to platform.
