You need a wanted list.
You can find each set on Bricklink, and that part out each set into a wanted
list.
One way to do this is to part out into a wanted list, with "Exclude all part
by default". Then, for each part you are missing, uncheck the "delete"
box, and your wanted list will only have the parts you are missing.
From the wanted list, you can do searches to find sellers who have more of the
parts you are missing.
This is a good project, as some of those set could have significant value if
you are able to complete them.

I decided to go ahead and enter comments for the listed variants in my inventory.
It was not too painful a process. I simply followed the instructions for this
given in the initial FAQ. (It is the process wherein you create a wanted list,
and then see which variant parts are in your store) I will add that I only did
this for my current existing stock. I will not be carrying the process forward
for new stock. I'm treating this is sort of an experiment, just to see if
it makes any difference.
However, having done this, I don't know that I would recommend you do the
same, unless you are very devoted to distinguishing the variants, or believe
that your buyers are discriminating enough to care about the comments and variant
distinctions.
Bricklink officially advises you that it is not worth your time. You can decide
to provide comments distinguishing none, some, or all of the variants in your
stock - it is very unlikely to make a difference to the vast majority of buyers.
I hope this helps.

This will go to the buyer. If the buyer does not respond immediately then you

New buyers in particular often do not check messages. However, they will complain
that it took a long time to ship. So, don't delay shipping too much by waiting

do it.
2. There is nothing wrong with sending a polite reminder by email, or Bricklink
messaging. After 5-7 days is giving the person lots of time.
3. There is nothing nasty about an NPB. An NPB acts as a reminder. It the reminder
works, then the buyer experiences no negative impact from an NPB. If the reminder
does not work, then NPB should be completed, and other sellers warned.

| I'm looking at this issue and trying to understand it, and decided to throw
in my two cents.
"For sellers, more variants means extra sorting and extra work while pulling
orders, plus the issues that arise from variant misunderstandings."
This statement in Russell's original announcement is unequivocally true.
Require sellers to manage multiple variants places burdens on the sellers.
First of all, in parting out sets. For many sets, there are alternative variants
for various parts, that the seller needs to manually check, by counting whether
a hinge has seven teeth, or nine, for example. Which variant is in that set
seems like the luck of the draw. And then ensure I keep these visually identical
parts separate in storage.
In fulfilling orders. Heaven forbid I got the wrong stud type on the round bricks,
or the wrong X shape axle hole. then I have to scramble to find or source the
correct part so that the buyer is not upset, but the sad truth is that the buyer
most likely does not actually care about the specific variant, but just picked
the first round brick on the list, or the cheaper one. That is probably true
for a majority of buyers. I'm not too lazy to sort variants, if I have to,
but this is a lot of stress.
Something else I consider is that this issue is going to get larger. In the next
five to ten years, the number of mold changes and variants of parts is going
to keep growing. This is as good a time as any to make decisions about whether
Bricklink will keep adding more and more variants, or whether it will put limitations
on which variants are supported. The sets of today, will be "classics"
in a few years, and some builders will demand that sellers provide the theoretically
"authentic" part. How big will we allow the variant list to grow - without
limit?
My final observation is that the discussion here points to the tension created
by two aspects of Bricklink. On the one end is the wish for Bricklink to be the
definitive Wikipedia of all Lego parts and their history. The other side of the
tension is the idea of Bricklink as a great way to buy and sell lego parts. Although
these two ideas are usually complementary, they also create tension that leads
to the challenge of the current discussion.
The Bricklink catalogue is indeed a great asset to sellers, buyers, and all Lego
hobbyists. But is it reasonable to dedicate so much effort to ensure that the
catalogue is comprehensive in documenting information that the Lego company itself
doesn't care to maintain? Particularly when doing so places serious burdens
on sellers? I truly value the information in the catalogue, but honestly, I am
going to feel relieved when I don't feel obligated to sort out and maintain
separate inventories for all these variant parts.
I will keep my current stock separate, and add comments to listings to help buyers
find variants in my store. But it will be as an experiment to see if they actually
sell.
I can't contribute to the discussion here about the functional differences
in variants. However, in keeping with my former career as an archivist, I will
ask Bricklink to do whatever they can to preserve historical data, somewhere.
It would be a shame if it were to be lost.
That's enough of that.

is rolling out on February first that will cause several types of pieces to be
merged together under specific listings. For example, slopes that have smooth
and rough sides will no longer be considered different pieces. Now, this is
a BIG PROBLEM. When you are MOCing and you need a specific texture for a, lets
say, roof, and you use the wrong texture, it stands out A LOT. I hope everyone
sees what I am getting to here. If sellers are allowed to combine those two VERY
DIFFERENT variants of pieces, I may need to do several orders to get the actual
pieces I want, and it won't be the sellers fault if they send me a mix of
TWO DISTINCT TYPES OF PIECES. I am new to Bricklink, so maybe this has happened
before, but right now, this seems like it could pose a huge problem. I am sure
the Bricklink Devs had good intentions in mind when they decided to merge these
piece variants, but what they said in their letter to the Sellers, quote, "We
consider them (the piece variants) to be relatively unimportant and cumbersome
from the viewpoint of the Bricklink Marketplace" IS NOT TRUE. Specific things
like the textured variants of pieces DO MATTER. Please spread the word and hopefully
the Bricklink Devs will listen to the community.
|
Some sellers will continue to separate variants, and indicate the type in the
comments section of the listings. It seems from the comments here that there
are a ton of sellers who are committed to doing this! If you are looking for
a specific variant of a part, such as, "Slope with smooth surface" you
should be able to use the advanced search function to search for all comments
that describe that variant. As the seller will have specified the exact variant
in the comments, you should have an even better chance of getting exactly the
correct variant.

There is nothing to stop a seller for including the helmet along with the hair,
in fact, there are many listings that do so.
I think in-set variants or anything that greatly multiplies the number of variants

Bricklink is a market place for buying lego parts you need. If you buy a minifigure
with hair, but want the helmet, then you should buy the helmet from a seller.
That way, sellers get more business.

When I’m buying figs for my own collection, I’ll take the time to read the comments
and it’s not a huge deal. As a seller, however, it drives me nuts. When someone
lists a used fig as new, they usually sell it for well under the 6 month average,
which obviously affects what buyers believe is the average cost for actual new
figures. I know what they’re doing goes against BrickLink’s policy, but they
either didn’t get the memo or they don’t care.
As sellers, does this drive you bananas or do you just shrug it off? Do you keep
your new figs listed at a price that maintains a reasonable profit margin, or
do you cut your losses to compete with current average prices?

If a seller lists a minifig as "New" but then puts in the description
comments "Like new" or "looks new" then the ambiguity shows that
it is not "new", but "used". Listings like this can be reported
to admin, and they will be removed.
There is no point in being driven "nuts" or "bananas" and there
is not point in "shrugging it off." Report incorrect or fraudulent listings.

"Like New" is an incorrect descriptor for a used part. "New"
in Bricklink does not describe the surface condition of a part, it describes
the usage history. That means that to say that a used part is "like new"
is saying that it is not "like used" which would make no sense, and potentially
confuse buyers who may take it to mean that although the item has been listed
as used, it is actually new, or has the same usage history as a new part.

For many years Lego sets did not come with numbered bags, and the instructions
did not refer to numbered bags. You just found the part, and built according
to the instructions. Even young children can perform this task.
I think you must be selling a "used" set. By definition, I think, "used"
means that the parts are no longer in their numbered bags. If the buyer wants
to have parts in the correct numbered bags, they should buy a "new" set.

This invoice copy looks different than other invoices sent out a week ago.
Is there any possibility that my invoice has been changed? What do I do to ensure

The buyer is requesting you cancel the order.
You can cancel the order using the "problem order" menu.
You should not refund a payment that you have not actually received yet.
When you complete the order cancellation, you will be prompted to upload the
order items back into your inventory.
In my view, an order cancelled by mutual consent should not have any feedback
from either side, since, in a way, no transaction occurred.

the missing parts and so much Lego to sort through that's all mixed up, I'm

there people who sort out Lego - is that a thing?

I started my Bricklink journey in much the same place as you are now. Here are
some thoughts.
1. If you think you just want to sell individual parts, I don't recommend
it, unless you really want to open a store, and go into the business, or hobby
of running a store and selling. You can get some money for your bulk lego parts
without a lot of sorting.
2. Completing used sets, and selling them on Bricklink is a real option. You'll
ultimately get more money from the lego, and you won't have to worry about
an unsold inventory of individual parts. You can sell the sets one at a time,
as you complete them.
3. To complete sets, I recommend first trying to identify which sets are represented
in your trove of lego. Then, start by concentrating on the sets with the most
potential value, and which ones seem easiest complete. Here's a tip: look
for the minifigures. For many sets, minifigures make up the largest percentage
of the re-sale value, and also may be the hardest or most expensive parts
to replace if they are missing. If you think you have most, or all of the minifigues,
then definitely consider completing the set for sale. If you are missing most
of the figures, or some key figures, it might not be worth it to buy those considering
what you'll likely get for the set. Also, its a bonus if you have the instruction
manuals.
4. You can sort your Lego. We all do it. I know it looks daunting at first,
but it can be fun to learn about all the odd shapes and colors available. Plus,
there is always good advice on the forum, if you are not sure. (My advice, sort
by type.)
5. I remember the first big star wars set I put together out of a pile of unsorted
lego. I bought the missing parts from Bricklink, and then, I sold the set on
Ebay. I wish now, that I had sold that set on Bricklink. It would have been a
much more enjoyable experience.
Good luck!

You have a small store with little inventory. That will make it hard for buyers
to find you, and find something they want to buy.
I personally do not believe it is going to help to cut your prices drastically.
Increase your inventory.
It is ok to start small. That gives you some room to learn as you grow.

| None of my orders to U.S. buyers have taken as long as six weeks.
Canada Post lists their standards for delivery. Not a guarantee, but for example,
small packet air to U.S. (untracked) is expected to arrive in 5-8 days. While
tracking is listed at 4-7 days. From my experience, I'd add about a week
to those times.
If your seller is telling you that 4-6 weeks is normal, that's way off.
What did you pay for shipping? If the seller mailed your purchase by lettermail,
without a customs declaration, they made a big mistake. It is possible the package
will be stopped at the border, and eventually sent back to the seller, which
would explain a lengthy delay.
I recommend that you continue in conversation with the seller. I'm assuming
(hoping) that you have both confirmed that the delivery address was complete
and accurate.
If any inquiries are to be made to Canada Post, that is the seller's responsibility
to do so.
Given the time that has elapsed, you should be discussing what the seller will
do if the package is lost. If the seller remains communicative and reasonable,
then you can agree to wait another week. If the seller doesn't communicate,
then you can go ahead with other action such as NSS or paypal refund.
Good luck.

| You would probably not have had any problems if you had not described it as "Great
Condition" That is a very subjective term, and a buyer may have expected
that "Great Condition" meant the minifig was pristine.
It would have been clearer, more accurate to describe the minifig more completely
i.e. "Some arm swing wear".
I agree with those who suggest you should offer a full refund. The buyer did
not get what he was expecting. (Yes, the expectations may have been somewhat
unrealistic, but that is what buyers do when they find a minifig they always
wanted for a good price: convince themselves it is going to be awesome, and have
buyer remorse later.)

| Can anyone help distinguish between "Used - Like New" and "Used -

|
Conditions are not a subjective matter in Bricklink - they have specific definitions
that need to be followed when listing items.
See here: https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=102&q=condition
"Like New" is a description that should not be used. Such listings can
be reported and removed.
In my view, "Used" and "New" on Bricklink should be thought of
as descriptions of history, rather than condition. "New" means that in
the item's history, it has not been used (except as necessary for sorting
and packing). And "Used" means that someone has used it, i.e. to play
with, or to build and display (Which is how adults play with Lego).
Although we generally think New is better than used, it is not always the case.
Theoretically, a used part could be in equal, or even better condition than a
"new" part. For example, when I the Black Pearl set from Lego, it arrived
soaking wet, the cardboard box was disintegrating, and possibly some parts had
fallen out. But I had not opened it, or played with it, so under Bricklink's
conditions for listing items for sale, that was still technically "new",
but who would want that?

| This person first of all, asks you to provide an enhanced level of service, requiring
extra work. And then asks for a discount.
And the reason you should do all this is because of a vague suggestion that you
will get lots of future business from them.
I'd rather consider meeting special requests for customers who already have
a history of repeat purchases in my store.
It is also my opinion that "mint" is not a helpful descriptor on Bricklink."Mint"
is overused, and misused on Bricklink It is not one of the condition definitions
in Bricklink, such as "New" "Sealed" etc. Those have definitions,
but anyone advertising "mint" is just giving their opinion. I would not
promise anyone that a set I'm selling is mint. I would send a picture, and
give a detailed description, and that should be enough.

| Please save yourself from a world of frustration: Sort your parts for sale by
type, not by colour. I wish I had started that way. It would have saved me a
lot of time.
I only use Bricklink to add inventory. Either I part out sets, or I look up parts
in the catalogue and add them from there. https://www.bricklink.com/inventoryAdd.asp
This will be easy to do, because you sorted your parts by type, not by colour.
When you parts to your inventory that you already have in stock, the system will
give you a prompt asking whether you want to list them as a separate lot, or
combine with the existing lot (Parts that are the same). Unless you want to identify
by a remark, or to give a description of condition, choose to combine to existing
inventory.
Buyers don't like searching in a seller's store and seeing multiple listings
for the same part. Avoid this. You can also search in your store inventory for
"Unique items" to see if you have identical items in separate lots.
Good luck!

It is not fine line in regard to stating condition of items for sale. The definition
is clear. Displaying minifigures means they are no longer "new". The
issue of whether new minifigures can be assembled is mostly a matter of personal
choice, of either the seller, or the buyer. I do not assemble new minifigures

Unfortunately, UPS and FEDEX charge exorbitant "brokerage" fees.
Sellers in the USA do not know this, and they think they are doing buyers a favor
by offering what looks to them like fast, inexpensive shipping.
The seller does not realize what huge charges the buyer is going to face on delivery.
When this happened to me for the first time, I paid the brokerage fee and chalked
it up to experience. But I learned to remind US sellers NOT to ship using anything
but USPS.
I ordered a book once, not realizing it would be sent from the company's
US office. They used FEDEX, and I got hit with $10.00 brokerage fees on a $19.00
book. Brokerage fees are to deal with customs duty on cross border shipments,
but there is no customs duty on books, so there you go.
Don't blame the seller for this, (unless they told you it would be sent by
USPS).

Yes. This explains some things. You had a buyer there was probably no way to
please, and this behaviour was a hint as to what would follow.
$20 bucks is a lot for a minifig and a lot to lose on by refunding. That hurts.
I hope you get a better resolution and do well on your future sales.

| I'm reading this to mean that the images of the minifigure showed some condition
problems that were not described in the comments section regarding condition.
(Because you offered a discount).
So the first thing to do, is make sure that used minifigures are described in
detail, particularly about things that matter to buyers, such as yellowing, cracks,
scratches, arm circles, etc.
Next, I would not have offered a small discount to try to make the buyer happier
with the part which was already being questioned. I would have apologized to
the buyer that the condition was not up to my standard, accepted my mistake in
not listing it adequately, and offered to cancel the order with a full refund.
Next, I hate to tell you this but your terms really don't mean anything.
Especially, "the product is to be considered satisfactory by the buyer."
Your terms have no power to make anyone think, or consider anything. Terms should
tell the buyer what you will do if there is a problem, not try to stop them from
having buyer's remorse or trying to get a refund if they are not 100% satisfied.
Yes, the buyer did agree to complete the purchase after seeing photographs, but
some people are funny that way. And ultimately, the customer is always right.
Next, just don't sell dirty minifigures or parts. Even at reduced price,
people won't be really happy with them. People don't want to wash the
minifigures themselves, and they don't want instructions on how to do it.
Those things will make people think you are not professional.
Next, to repeat, the customer is always right. Even though you took steps to
ensure the buyer knew what he or she was getting, they are not happy with the
product. I would contact the buyer with an apology that the minifigure was not
up to my usual high standards and offer a refund for the minifigure. If it was
a low vale minifig, I'd probably just let the buyer keep it, but if high
value, arrange for it to be returned. In most cases, I'd rather lose out
on some money than to receive a negative feedback.
I don't think you are being totally unreasonable. After all, the buyer saw
a photograph. But that is not really the issue here. The issue is an unhappy
buyer, and how you can make them feel better about their experience in your store
and so they don't feel a need to escalate a complaint further.
Just to reiterate my comment on terms, I am aware that some sellers try to configure
their terms in such a way so that they won't ever have to deal with unhappy
buyers. In my view that is unrealistic, because you can't please everyone
all the time, and we sellers aren't perfect either. It's better to expect
you'll have some problems, and plan to deal with them in the most professional,
honest, way possible to ensure a happy buyer.

It is unclear from your message whether the seller has communicated with you
at all. If you are getting no replies, there could be a reason for that such
as illness or vacation. Remember to always communicate through Bricklink.
If the seller shipped two weeks after July 20, then the order would have shipped
August 3 or 4, which is only a week ago. Depending on where you ordered from,
that may not be long enough for delivery.
You haven't mentioned if you have other reasons to suspect the seller is
a scammer, such as very low feedback, problematic feedback, or offered a high
value item at a price too good to be true. A seller with good feedback is less
likely to be a scammer, and there is a chance you may still get your package.
In the meantime, you should file a NSS complaint on Bricklink right away. This
is a good way to get a seller's attention.

Author: | calebfishn | Posted: | Aug 9, 2023 10:37 | Subject: | Re: Official Definitions for set condition? | Viewed: | 46 times | Topic: | Selling | |
| Bricklink does have standard definitions of condition for new and used sets.
You should become familiar with the Bricklink terms and definitions prior to
opening a store.
Here is a quote:
Sets:
In addition to condition (New/Used), sets also have a sub-condition to indicate
whether the set is complete or incomplete.
New Sets
(without sub-condition) are assumed to be Sealed unless otherwise stated in the
description.
Sealed - Set is brand new, with unopened factory seals intact, all inner bags
and contents presumably sealed, intact, complete and untampered with as shipped
by the manufacturer. Seller cannot guarantee that a sealed set is complete.
Complete - Contents are brand new and may have been removed from their plastic
bags and handled for inventorying purposes only. Includes all contents that originally
came with set including extra parts, stickers, instructions (if any) and original
box/packaging.
Incomplete - Contents are brand new and may have been removed from their plastic
bags and handled for inventorying purposes or during the removal of items from
the set. Set is missing some contents, instructions or original box/packaging.
Description should state what exactly is missing.
Used Sets - The set has been opened, inner bags are no longer intact and or was
previously built. If the parts do show excessive wear, discoloration, excessive
scratches, other marks, etc. this should be noted, as well.
(without sub-condition) should indicate in the description if any contents are
missing.
Complete - Set contains all parts necessary to build all of the models (including
alternate models) in the instructions but does not have to contain the original
box/packaging and/or extra parts. If the set is missing instructions, the description
must state so. If the set did not come with instructions then the set should
include all parts listed in the picture inventory which is located on the box
or bucket. The set must include all original stickers used on the model either
still on the sticker sheet or applied.
Incomplete - Set is missing some contents. Description should state what exactly
is missing.

yet, but I'm curious as to which is a better option for selling complete
used sets. Additionally I have lots of loose pieces that I've collected over
the last several years either from the PAB wall or from resale stores like
Bricks and Minifigs. Would love to sell off some of those as well, but unsure
how to go about doing that. Thanks for the feedback and expertise!
|
You have a couple of options with used sets. The first thing I do is to check
the part out value vs. the average sale value. Many times the part out value
is higher than the value of the complete used set.
Then I try to estimate whether the set is fairly desirable and likely to sell
reasonably quickly. If it is a low value, less desirable set that won't sell
for a long time, then I am more likely to part it out into my store inventory.
If a set is incomplete, then it's a calculation of how much trouble and expense
it will be to sort it all out, figure out what is missing, and then purchase
the missing parts from Bricklink to complete the set. If completing the set
won't give a significant profit on resale, then I'm more likely to part
the set out.
On the other hand, selling parts has it's own challenges. You need to sort
out parts, inspect parts for quality, and store the parts in some way that allows
to to retrieve them efficiently to fill orders. And although the most valuable
parts, (usually the minifigs) will sell the fastest, you'll end up with a
good percentage of other parts that don't sell for a long time and sit in
your inventory, taking up space.

1. When you make sales on Bricklink, Bricklink will charge you a seller's
fee as a percentage. They'll send you an invoice monthly. Nothing to worry
about, just pay it.
2. You don't need to worry about income tax until you make income from your
store. In the meanwhile, get real tax information from the CRA website, or an
accountant.
3. Most sellers are not set up to collect GST/HST or to remit amounts to the
government. . Eventually Bricklink will take care of collecting the tax from
Canadian buyers. In the mean time, do your research. You can start here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/businesses/topics/gst-hst-businesses.html.
4. The Bricklink forum is a great source of information, but I wouldn't depend

|
I haven't used any type of postage meter, but I also do not use the smaller
denominations. I use a mix of the adhesive stamps that go over by a $0.05-0.10
but are well worth it for little hassle.
For example, 200g = $3.19, but I'll use the $1.94 lettermail stamp + $1.30
US stamp = $3.24. 300g = $4.44 with a $1.94 stamp + 2x $1.30 US stamps ($4.54).
Alternatively, if you ship enough to get a volume contract, you can look into
printing your own lettermail postage without a postage meter.

| I'm concerned that the video goes after Bricklink with its claim that Bricklink
is infested with thousands of counterfeit parts. This is more likely an issue
affecting the entire supply chain, rather than just Bricklink.
Let's say someone produced two molds, one torso, and one head, and then made
a hundred thousand of each. (You need the volume to support the initial cost
of molds) Their next action would be to sell those parts. They wouldn't likely
do it selling a couple of parts at a time on Ebay, or Bricklink, or some other
market. I think they would contact very large sellers, on Bricklink or elsewhere,
and offer to sell them these parts in bulk. The people who buy those bulk lots
may indeed be reputable, and none the wiser they are fakes. But by then, the
parts are in the supply chain, as people buy, sell, and trade them via various
venues, and it gets harder and harder to trace them. The result is eventually
it trickles down to some unsuspecting seller accused of selling a single counterfeit,
and replies: "Can't be fake. I got it new from a really well known seller
in Germany (or somewhere) who has excellent feedback."
This scenario is just a guess, but I think there was an example of it a while
ago, when there were all these Darth Vader Helmets, and Mjolnirs, etc. suddenly
appearing in large numbers in previously unknown trans colours. (I don't
believe the molds were faked in those cases, but the distribution scenario that
got those parts in the pipeline may be the same).
From the video, it seems the main market for the allegedly counterfeit parts
is people producing customs for sale.
At any rate, I think it is an issue for the Lego company. I know that those
sellers who list inventory of large numbers of rare parts guard their sources
pretty well, but in this case, they should cooperate in tracking down the origin
of potentially counterfeit parts for the benefit of us all.
In the meantime, as a seller, I would be emphasizing that any new minifig parts
I have for sale came directly from parting out new sets.

answer.
I've had a few lately that decide to answer only after NPB is initiated saying
shipping cost is too high. What does it take to take 1 minute to answer an email
saying shipping is too high, I wish to cancel ? No they prefer to either never
respond and go through the full NPB process or answer at the last minute before
the end of the process which prevents me from finishing the NPB process.
And I cannot leave negative or neutral feedback to warn other sellers in the
latter case because they will certainly retaliate.
It seems there are more and more buyers acting this way (a tendency not only
seen in Bricklink but in everyday life with more and more people not showing
at appointments, etc.).
I wish Bricklink had a way of guaranteeing the seller would not get a retaliatory
feedback if he leaves negative feedback to warn other sellers when the NPB process
could not be completed.
Any advice on your side ?
Thanks for reading.
|
I always leave negative feedback on NPB's to warn other sellers. I have never
received a retaliatory negative feedback. Most NPB's are people who placed
an order on a whim or as an experiment, and who never log on to Bricklink again.
The only reason an NPB can't be completed is if the buyer eventually pays.
Think of the NPB as a reminder. If the buyer pays in response, then the reminder
worked, so,, assuming all else was well, I don't leave negative feedback
in that case.
If I agree with the buyer to cancel the order, then I do not leave any feedback
at all, and I ask the buyer to do the same.
I don't know why people are not happy with your shipping costs. But you may
consider people may find it a bit extreme that you are charging them $1.00 for
a bubble mailer that costs about 30 cents.

Regardless of your terms. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST PACKAGES.
If you do nothing the least you can expect is a negative. If paid through paypal

You contracted the postage company to deliver the order not the buyer. The buyer

You should either replace the parts and ship again or provide a full refund.

So the buyer willingly chose not to insure his very expensive order and now I

Sure. Why not? You accepted a responsibility to the buyer when you accepted
the buyer's money. Now the buyer doesn't have his money, or his lego.
How is that fair? What retailer of any product anywhere would insist they brear
no responsibility in a case like this?
You had options. You could have cancelled the order rather than ship without
insurance. Or, you could have purchased insurance yourself to cover the risk
of a very expensive order.
