It is a catalog inconsistency, and it isn't the only one. These may or may
not be dealt with in the future.

Aren't they meant to be tentacles, so part of the creature rather than discrete
weapons.

I have added a note to the inventory that the instructions show a wrong part.

b) No

Most sales of variants are driven by the inventories, which in turn populate
buyer want lists. If the variants aren't going to be in the inventories,
there is no point in differentiating them.

I'll keep what I currently have separated and try to send the same variant
for an order, but once I run out that's it. My shop is small and I cannot
charge the premium prices needed to justify the additional labor of continuing
to sort these to service for the vintage collector/restorer market.

Yes, I do plan on listing the different molds whenever possible. However, I am
already in the habit of distinguishing between many variants in my Comments.
It's not a great system though and requires a significant amount of extra
work on my part. I wouldn't think it is a viable option for any other than
specialty or hobby shops like mine. It's a nightmare to check inventory
when you have multiple lots per part. I have to label everything and note how
many total lots I have so I don't mess up and grab the wrong lot when pulling
orders.

I also distinguish between 'good' used and play wear. So, I end up with
many lots for vintage parts. I would bet it is actually quite off-putting to
those trying to fill out wanted lists. I constantly worry that the Easy Buy system
is bringing buyers to my shop without reading the Comments before placing an
order.

Thanks,
~Jen

Already use it to separate unrecognised variants, this just means I have even
more, certain to increase in future when other changes are implemented.

Those are good arguments against doing it.

There are good arguments on both sides. For example, the fact that in LEGO doesn't
distinguish some mould variants is a good argument why BL doesn't need to.
But then there are cases where LEGO does distinguish and BL aggregates them under
a single number plus letter for the variant.

It could be complicated where BL has used single entries for parts when LEGO
has used multiple. For example, I wonder what will happen in the longer term
to parts like this.

Part No: 6019 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip (Horizontal Grip)
*
6019 Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip (Horizontal Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

Part No: 61252 Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip (Horizontal Grip)
*
61252 Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip (Horizontal Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

where they have different BL code numbers and

Part No: 4085a Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip Thin (Vertical Grip)
*
4085a Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip Thin (Vertical Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

Part No: 4085b Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip Thin (Vertical Grip)
*
4085b Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip Thin (Vertical Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

Part No: 4085c Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip Thick (Vertical Grip)
*
4085c Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with U Clip Thick (Vertical Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

Part No: 4085d Name: Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip Thick (Vertical Grip)
*
4085d Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Open O Clip Thick (Vertical Grip)
Parts: Plate, Modified

where they use the same number but variant letters, even though LEGO has used
a range of different item numbers for the d variant. Should the latter be merged
or should they be split into different part numbers? Should the different d variants
have multiple entries even though they appear to be the same thing. It seems
strange that these two types of clip are treated in a very different way, one
keeping two distinct codes, the other aggregating them into one but using made
up code letters to distinguish them.

If the image comparing 4085 variants is removed, and there is just one 4085 entry
not showing any differences, will most people even care? If they can use any
3001 from the late 70s onwards to complete a 1982 set or a 2024 set because the
inventory says so, why not use any 1x1 clip with vertical grip because the inventory
also says so. Does it really matter that one person (often later) said that they
found a particular variant in their set, so everyone else's set should be
the same if it is to be the real thing and allowed to be sold here. Of course,
it may well be true that they found that exact part in a sealed set that cost
them $100s, but should that impact on everyone else if they want to sell a used
set.

No but for the first few months I will keep them separated so that where possible
I can pick a buyers order with all the same type. Once I feel more confident
that the buying community has become accustomed to the fact that they could receive
either variant within the same order batch I may then start to merge my stocks
into the same storage bin.

No. I think such comments might confuse and possibly put off some buyers. The
a, b, c type variants only really exist because they were catalogued here. If
they are no longer catalogued here then adding a comment that you will get a
'b' variant will be lost on many buyers and may leave them wondering
what they will get. It really depends on which images are retained to show the
part once merged. Where vintage parts come from known sets, I think I will comment
as i do now on the date range or the set they came from, if those parts attract
a premium price.

Those are good arguments against doing it.

I don't know.

Post an image of the flag, front and back, in Catalog Identification. Maybe you
have a different flag than the one you think you have.

To check it's size properly in studs, for measuring it, simply place it on
a LEGO baseplate and photograph it.

It's pretty easy to properly identify it and validate that it's a genuine
LEGO element.

I already verified that it's the same size and coloring. It's the same
flag as listed in the catalog.

That looks like yellowing due to age or interaction with chemicals present in
the environment. Unfortunately I don't know how you would clean that, but
perhaps someone on the forums will see this post and help you out with some information.
It might also be the lighting has an effect on the colors picked up in the flag.

For future reference it's easy to add parts using the "Add macro"
button when editing your post, the part above would look like the below macro
I've added to this post, reply to this and look at how the forum software
inserts it to get a better understanding. For best results, use the "Add
macro" button, as it will show colors that a part has available for it, and
color information stops the error you will get when trying to add parts without
using the "Add macro" button:

Part No: x376px6 Name: Cloth Flag 8 x 5 Wave with Royal Knights Lion Head on Red and White Background Pattern

Right, I'm aware of the other sets in that theme, but that doesn't really
matter since none of them came with the large flag. I had King's Carriage,
Skeleton Surprise, and Royal Drawbridge.

In such a small set that has a good photo in the catalog, you can clearly see

Hi

I’ve been having a google and I’m pretty sure this set had instructions. It’s
marked as blank in BL. I don’t have them so I can’t be sure. Is there a way to
verify / update?

It seems the plume feathers that are not used in the minifig are extra parts.
The extra plumes are seldom found with used sets found at sales. Keys in the
Harry Potter set are also confusing in this regard. Other parts like 1x1 round
plates come together and the unused ones are considered extra parts. It does
not seem right that a castle must be listed as incomplete if an unused plume
is not included.

It can be listed as complete per definition of used complete set:

Complete - Set contains all parts necessary to build all of the models
(including alternate models) in the instructions
but does not have to contain
the original box/packaging and/or extra parts. If the set is missing instructions,
the description must list this. If the set did not come with instructions then
the set should include all parts listed in the picture inventory which is located
on the box or bucket. The set must include all original stickers used on the
model either still on the sticker sheet or applied.

This definition does not say "Set contains all parts in the regular
or alternate section".
If the plumes in a castle set are not used in any alternate model, the set can
be listed complete without them.

This is especially true of black plumes.

Plume feather small 4502a x 1
plume feather large 4502c x 1

The instructions show neither of these (perhaps I have missed them) but does
show
plume feather triple 4502b

Thanks for your help.

This is especially true of black plumes.

Set No: 6059 Name: Knight's Stronghold
*
6059-1 (Inv) Knight's Stronghold
206 Parts, 5 Minifigures, 1990
Sets: Castle: Black Knights

It is used in a minifigure:

Minifig No: cas173 Name: Breastplate - Armor over Black, Black Helmet, Dark Gray Visor, Blue 3-Feather Plume
*
cas173 (Inv) Breastplate - Armor over Black, Black Helmet, Dark Gray Visor, Blue 3-Feather Plume
Minifigures: Castle: Black Falcons

Use the “break minifigure” option to show parts that are used in minifigures
to the inventory.

Now, for the usual question of why the other plumes are in Regular while they
are not used to build the set:

The plumes came together on a sprue:

Part No: 4502 Name: Minifigure, Plume / Feather Wheel, 3 on Sprue
*
4502 (Inv) Minifigure, Plume / Feather Wheel, 3 on Sprue
Parts: Minifigure, Headgear Accessory
so the sprue should be in Regular.
But as one is already in a minifigure, the sprue is broken and two remaining
plumes go to Regular too.

Yes the full plume wheel is in the set. It has to be taken apart as 1 is needed
for the figure so the rest are normal parts

Could it be that Rebrickable shows white on the assembly of the two? Like:

Parts: Turntable {White}
(which is in the "alternate items" on the inventory for your set).

“Counterpart,” not “Alternate”

Rebrickable (wrongly) has the base in White (and I don’t think they do assemblies/counterparts
there).
Brickset (which has this inventory from LEGO) has it in Black, like BL.

I think this is just that OP stumbled upon an inventory with errors on Rebrickable.
They have a forum there too where I guess this can be discussed.

I've seen cases where the part is missing completely from Rebrickable.

Also, Rebrickable now shows the extra parts (which Lego catalogs never do).

They are not from the same source.

Inventories on Rebrickable are taken directly from LEGO, which means they contain
the inventory as reported by LEGO, which may not be the same as was actually
shipped out and which does not cater for all variants that Bricklink distinguishes
(but may distinguish variants that are considered as the same on Bricklink).

Inventories on Bricklink are (nowadays) pre-filled from the same source of LEGO,
but are always manually checked and verified against what was actually packed.
The Bricklink inventories are also amended by distinguishing variants, counting
the extras (like most small parts), alternates (like different variants) and
counterparts (like stickers applied on parts, or wheel-tire assemblies).

Also, please keep in mind that although LEGO's part numbers (design ids)
are used on multiple platforms, the numbering of variants and decorated parts
may differ from platform to platform.

What sort of discrepancies? Part variations? Missing parts? Modern or vintage

It's been over 3 months since it came on the market :o

Hello,

Yes, this time frame is very unusual. The member who was originally working on
this set and did the lion's share of the work was unable to finish it, unfortunately.

I am working on it now, and it is complete and waiting for approval. There's
a discrepancy in the data from LEGO which has to be worked out. The box says
4803 parts but only 4801 are actually used from what I found! It will be ready
as soon as this info is confirmed and the admin decide how to proceed.

Thanks,

It's a very large set, so if someone is working on the inventory, it will
take a while.

If you have the set, you can add the inventory here:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvAdd.asp?viewType=S

Yes, the forms are a bit tricky to figure out. If you would like to add a stickered
part to a set on BrickLink, here is a guide for the process:

of use. I’m nearly finished doing that, and I’m to the point where I want to
easily put some of these sets together. I had assumed (likely foolishly) that
I would be able to do the reverse of “Part Out” based on my inventory - ex: I
choose a set that I have a specific item for that only comes in one set, I click
it, it says what parts it contains - is there any way to directly cross reference
that with the inventory I have in my parts, and second, to move the parts from
Parts to Set as a collective?

Next, I had thought I could do this in my Wanted list, but when I put items into
the Wanted list by way of parts, the quantity I own does not show. Is there anywhere
it will show without individually clicking on every item?

Thanks!

You can enter -1 in the amount of a set you have to partout. I have never done
it and it feels kind of risky to me, but I have seen it mentioned as a solution
to your problem before.

There's confusion as to how many parts are in this actual set, which I believe
to be brickset's inventory not being complete:m

Brickset.com states on it's entry for this set: "According to the set
database, this set has 194 parts." but the official LEGO instructions contain
158 parts. The inventory from LEGO.com contains 158 parts. This suggests that
the inventory is 81.4% complete."

The entry on peeron.com states that the string is braided, 21L, and contains
end studs.

http://peeron.com/inv/sets/6462-1

If anyone has a sealed 6462 please verify what is in it. The only sets for sale
on BrickLink are all used, some incomplete.

Apart from the string length, the BrickLink inventory looks pretty accurate.

Cheers ...

ghyde

There are also some sets where the string is sold inclusive to a reel and hook.
So it could be listed like that.

Nita Rae

Perusing the inventory shows no official association listed for it. The whole
point is to try and determine what the string length in the original set was,
if at all possible.

String for sets back then likely came in either a cardboard box containing the
string or it was wound onto a flat piece of cardboard with tabs and with the
string inserted into notches or taped down. I seem to recall a few LEGO sets
that had the latter variety whenever string was included in a set.

You wouldn't happen to have any 6462 sets awaiting parting out would you?

Cheers ...

the inventory with the proper length of string that came with the set.

Ah yes. Even then, is there any guarantee the lengths are correct. I have a couple
of used strings from a set with a defined length and they are not exactly equal
to the length in the catalogue, both slightly different but over by up to 1cm.
Which suggests these either vary a little within production, have stretched in
use, were measured incorrectly or measured in a different way. It doesn't
matter for the function the string is used for, so not a big deal.

The strings will fluctuate around the number it should be according to LEGO inventory
data. So, a 50cm string will likely fall somewhere between 48.5cm to 51.5cm.
For our purposes, we use the number that TLG intended the set to be used with.

Thankyou all for your comments.

I am thinking I will purchase a string so I can make it approximately 50cm in
length.
It would be nice if someone could update the length or part number in bricklink.

As far as the number of parts go in the set, ...well, I will stick with bricklink
information. This is a different topic from my question.

Thanks,
Mark

String lengths are not exact and can indeed vary a bit. I have some notes from
a few sets with x77ac30. The string lengths I found varied between 29.5 and 31
cm.

Brickowl has it as 50cm long. So long as the longer string is genuine LEGO I
think you can use one that has been cut. After all, the strings were all originally
cut from a longer roll before being put into sets. I think the undetermined refers
to the length not being consistent over its production time. The length doesn't
really affect the play and it doesn't matter if it is off by a couple of
cm in production.

Cheers ...

Hello,

I wish to buy the string for set 6462 Aerial Recovery.
It is listed as:

x77a String, Cord Thin (Undetermined Length)

I see x77a listed with various lengths in the description. After someone tells
me length for set 6462 is it allowed to cut a longer string to that length.
OR does that mean I have ruined the string as a true Lego part?

How is it done to keep the set authentic? How to know proper string length?

Thanks,
Mark

Did you use a 3rd party tool or did you do it through BrickLink?

I used BrickStore as it seemed the easiest to handle inventory. Jokes on me…

Did you use the box in the bottom of this page?

https://www.bricklink.com/invXML.asp

Top one is upload new things, bottom one is to update inventory items with lot
id.

PD: If you consolidated using BrickStore don't you have the original file
you downloaded?

I figured out what I did. Unfortunately I had to go through an recount the ones
I cataloged that day. Not a huge deal...just happened to be the 1x1 rounds so
it was kind of obnoxious. Either way...I learned. haha

Not, unless you've downloaded your inventory as backup.

Of course I didn’t. So in order to override everything. I would need to pull
my Bricklink inventory on Brickstore, change the quantities and update. Alright.
Well, atleast this happened early on instead of later down the road.

Just opened second box and I'm not lucky. I have only one hat.

It’s usually region specific as in some factories that made it will include
it meanwhile others won’t but it has been a confirmed extra by many people and
extras are just that. Extras they may or may not be Included and sellers should
always check when parting out their set

I wonder if before the digital age each printer had to be manually set somehow.
That's a wide variation.

I doubt anyone knows for sure, just as there is still a lot to do sorting out
which early minifigures had both solid and blocked open studs.

Many are listed with either one or the other but may have been both so require
an alternative head added to list of parts.

How that ever gets resolved is beyond me, exact time lines are not easy to establish.

There is a note somewhere stating it is still to be determined.

If they are still in sets then you can use 'part out' from the set page.
If random mixed up parts then you have to identify, sort and list manually.

Most likely no. Speedbuilds would be your best bet/checking Instruction manuals
to see what parts are used after it says to open a certain bag

Hi Robert -

Thanks so much for catching that!

All of the tools that we use to verify and check set inventories do not account
for there being lines in the inventory that have a quantity of 0, so things like
that would always slip by unnoticed unless we go through every individual line
of the inventory one by one.

It has now been fixed.

Thanks,
Randy

Presumably they were added as parts then the submitter realised they were parts
of the thing being called a minifigure and had to be reallocated to that.

IIRC, it’s not the first time, nor the third, this was discussed for this set.

The other sets? Nope, or they didn’t make an impression

So I’d say put a note when there’s a discussion and only then.

People don’t read notes anyway

I just saw this on FB. Look at step 1. The turntable outer can be either yellow
or grey.

Full credit to Erik Lucas for this discovery.

But were light gray turntables ever found in that set? A color error in the
instructions doesn't mean that the set's inventory gets an alternate
added. However, finding a set that actually came with a light gray turntable
instead of a yellow one does.

David

There is a v1 & v2. On rebrickable.
Just not for the instruction manual
So i think the discussion for two versions is already done?
Dont know how this is done here on bricklink

On BrickLink, inventories are based on what actually came in sets. So, if only
one color of turntable ever came in the actual sets, the inventory will only
show one color of turntable, no matter what the instruction manuals show. In
other words, instruction manuals do not guide the inventories, the parts in the
sets do.

If we were to ever add an alternate part, we would need much more reliable proof
than two different instruction manuals from different printers. The fact that
the instruction manuals were printed at two different printers could mean that
one of them just simply messed up.

Cheers,
Randy

Full credit to Erik Lucas for this discovery.

But were light gray turntables ever found in that set? A color error in the
instructions doesn't mean that the set's inventory gets an alternate
added. However, finding a set that actually came with a light gray turntable
instead of a yellow one does.

David

There is a v1 & v2. On rebrickable.
Just not for the instruction manual
So i think the discussion for two versions is already done?
Dont know how this is done here on bricklink

I believe this set always came with yellow turntable and the instructions was
printed incorrectly a light gray but was later corrected. Mistakes on old instructions
was common indeed. I had discovered few mistakes in the instructions of my 857.
For example, two blue 2x10 plates on step 18 became light gray on step 19 (this
set only came with blue 2x10 plates anyway) See photos attached.

It is admittedly strange that the Lego designer of this set wanted a light gray
piece between a blue plate and a yellow chair. That would look odd and ugly.

One extra piece of evidence is that (probably) a yellow turntable was used on
an alternate build on the back of the box. The box does not have two versions.
This was discussed before. See photos attached in this discussion:

That sounds like the most sensible solution to me.

Cheers,
Randy

For the record, The Yellow one is printed in Germany by Frank Druck. Preetz/Holst.
And the Grey version in Printed in Germany by H. O. Persiehl, Hamburg. So it
is two different printers also.
Text is noted on the back of the manuals

Not exactly seeing where six of these would be used in the set, and I only see
one used in the instructions. The official LEGO data also says that there is
only one in the set.

I believe the inventory is correct.

You are correct. The best kind of correct!

It's simple. All contributions to the catalog are done by volunteers, and
no one has added them to the catalog yet.

If you have the rest of them, you can add them to BrickLink. See:

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/kdlqdrmu5u2gm7odvmn2a/How-to-Stickers.pdf?rlkey=zx9ohb9cyag6scheeo4fc80d3&dl=0

If you don't have them, you are unfortunately just going to have to wait
until someone does.

Cheers,
Randy

The parts you have pictured are the version with the groove (hence the "b"
at the end of the part number.) That version of the part, hollow bottom pin
or not, was not made until 2005. If you're rebuilding sets from the 1980s
and 90s, then they would definitely not have the version with the groove around
the bottom.
