It does not make sense as we have 4 occurrences in Belville Fairy-Tale sets,
4 in Fabuland and 1 in Harry Potter.

It will be the same discussion as to why these bad boys are categorized differently:

Part No: 90398 Name: Minifigure, Utensil Statuette / Trophy
*
90398 Minifigure, Utensil Statuette / Trophy
Parts: Minifigure, Utensil

Minifig No: 90398pb002 Name: Captain America Statuette / Trophy

Or these:

Part No: 2454 Name: Brick 1 x 2 x 5
*
2454 Brick 1 x 2 x 5
Parts: Brick
[m=sw0984]
And these examples show a different inconsistency: if it is deemed necessary
to place some of the decorated parts in the minifig category, why does poor Han
Solo get a designated minifig item ID (sw0984) whereas Captain America has to
make due with a lowly "pb" extension (instead of IDing him something
like shXXX)?

I have a question. I bought a big collection of Lego. Also included the Lego

the arms. Left arm middle 1 and right arm middle 2.

Please can you help me if they are real Lego or fake/custom.

Thank you for your time. Best regards

This would be unfair to a large portion of the buyers within the EU who have
the option to pay with IBAN (if the seller has this activated). With IBAN there
are no fees. Why would a buyer paying with IBAN be confronted with higher part
prices that include the paypal fees?

Some sellers put in an additional fee to cover stuff like driving to the post
office. Pretty much anyone else agrees these costs should just be considered
overhead, and be covered in the price of the product. Then you get a request
for local pick-up, which obviously doesn't need that drive. Are you suggesting
pricing-including-travel-costs is now unfair to the person doing local pick-up?

Keep things simple, don't stack on fees but offer price-of-product plus shipping
cost.

Voor mijn "werk-werk" heb ik regelmatig contact met allerlei bedrijven.
Ik erger mij aan die mensen die mij bij het allereerste gesprek al aanspreken

The issue seems to be that Bricklink is blocking all connections from the Brickpacker
server and as a result all functions accessing BrickLink fail.

Over 5000? If so, it'll be reset at midnight EDT.
Otherwise I don't know.

In case when you go over the API limit you can still establish a connection to
the server and get an error message. When the server blocks the connection you
don't even get that message anymore.

Maybe, but anyway wait until midnight EDT and see if I was right?

I hope you are right, but:

- The 5K limit is per seller, all his customers are blocked. It is unlikely that
they all went over the limit at the same time.
- You get a clear error message when you go over the limit, your connection isn't
blocked.
- My most recent experience with going over the limit is that you get an email
from BL.

This is most likely not related to the API call limit.

A while ago BL blocked some IP addresses for generating too much traffic. As
I understand BrickPacker, it hosts multiple shops on one (or very few) IP address(es).
Although each seller might stay under 5000 API requests, the sum of all that
traffic coming from one IP address may hit that other traffic limit.

Just received the BMNL October 2022.

There appears to be an error in Tip #1 ("how do I protect myself from fraud as
a seller"). It says:

Enable seller protection in your store settings. To do that go to My Store
Settings Management Seller protection. Once you’ve ticked that box, new buyers
(less than 100 days on the site or a feedback score of 5) won’t be able to place
an order with you.

I sure hope it is still just that new buyers are limited to instant check-out,
and NOT barred completely.

It clearly states "Show only Instant Checkout methods to new buyers" What gives
you pause with this, Niek? Are you picking-up or experienced something further
that might indicate otherwise?

This is an exact quote from the newsletter - again, it says under the section
"Tip #1: How do I protect myself from fraud as a seller?":

Enable seller protection in your store settings. To do that go to My Store Settings Management Seller protection. Once you’ve ticked that box, new buyers (less than 100 days on the site or a feedback score of 5) won’t be able to place an order with you.

The text is pretty clear here. It should have said that, when the setting is
enabled, these new buyers "... will only be able to pick instant checkout." Instead,
the newsletter says that new buyers "... won't be able to place an order
with you." (Not that we have enabled that option.)

Unless you have received a different-worded newsletter?

You referring to this section?

Yup (thank you for posting a pic - can't do that ATM). Even with the box
ticked, new buyers will still be able to place an order provided the shop offers
instant checkout. Saying they will be blocked all together is not how it works
(hopefully).

4623 Plate, Modified 1 x 2 with Bar Arm Up (Undetermined Type)

but that almost feels like I'm cheating

Take two.  Put them face-to-face / bar-to-bar.
— If they are the same, keep one, and put the other one in the ‘?’ pile.
— If they are not the same, keep the longest and put the other one in the ‘A’
pile.

Take another one and repeat.  At one time, you should be able to tell if ‘?’
is ‘A’ or ‘B’… unless all of those you have are the same variant

This. Also, when you put them bar-to-bar, "wiggle" them. You should clearly notice
if the bars are same length or if one is longer than the other. I tried explaining
that to my CFO, but she doesn't get that, and leaves these parts for me to
sort out.

for many abuses.

Ex: oh darn, I sold this too low!

There are many other ways for a seller to abuse the system. My point is that
there are legitimate reasons for a seller to want/need to initiate an
OIRR - your statement of "the only (good) reason a seller would request a cancel
is if he doesn't have the item" is simply not true. We (as a seller) have
initiated 4 OIRRs in the last couple of months, all to help out our customers.

This is an UI issue, nothing more.

In short, this is an UI issue.

I don't think so, it's just logical.

The only (good) reason a seller would request a cancel is if he doesn't have
the item.
So the item is deleted.

The only reason a buyer would request a cancel is because he doesn't want
it anymore (for any reason).
So the item comes back in shop.

You make generalized assumptions here.

In Canada, there is a steep difference in shipping prices for small items, and
items thicker than about 1.6cm, so fairly regularly it happens that a customer
wants to have an item removed from an order to lower shipping cost.

I don't know about French people and their computer / web skillz, but we
see quite often that customers don't know how to get an OIRR done (even if
we spell it out step-by-step). We then put in the OIRR. So I don't agree
with the blanket statement that a seller only would request a cancel if s/he
doesn't have the item.

The only thing you can infer from a seller-initiated OIRR is that s/he wants
that item removed from the order, nothing else.

Did we miss something?

If the buyer initiates an OIRR, it is the seller that confirms this. At that
point (of confirmation), the seller is actively "driving", so BL is able to then
ask the seller what to do with the items (add back to inventory etc).

If however the seller initiates the OIRR, it is the buyer that finally accepts
this. At that point, it is the buyer "driving", and s/he cannot decide whether
to add back to inventory etc.

In short, this is an UI issue. The OIRR should have an additional step,
where (if the buyer accepts) the seller gets the option of what to do with the
items.

What did they do to the search box algorithm this time? Or has this specific

---

The order of processing the search request should be:
(1) strip the leading color name if any ( 'very light gray' )
(2) replace 'space x space' by 'x' for dimensions
(3) apply the exclude words algorithm (but it should be done with a vocabulary
frequency list relevant to the Bricklink context only! It would make much more
sense to completely skip this step.)
(4) find the matching lots for sale based on the remaining search phrase ( 'tile'
)

---

How to find these lots now?
Searching without color filter gives the entire 2,002,093 lots of 'tile'.
As if the rare word 'very' is more common in our Bricklink database than
the common word 'tile'.

In this case I could just check each of the few tiles that exist in this color
separately, but how to get them together in a single search like for any other
color?

You could go into the store page, under "Parts" click "By Color".

Our provinces each have unique rules, making no efforts to harmonize. I would
go as far as saying certain provinces revel in the power to interfere. Particularly
difficult where small sellers are concerned. Bricklink has my sympathy. Its
probably our fault more than there’s.

The situation for Canada is a bit more complex than the US, in that provinces
and territories can levy their own provincial taxes (PST) on top of goods and
services taxes (GST). Some provinces have these combined in a harmonized tax
(HST). Different taxes might mean different instances for a market place to hand
over collected taxes, but I am not a marketplace-tax-expert.

Yup, a mess. But several times BL did promise implementation "soon" - for an
unknown value of "soon"...

Thanks for your reply. Yes I see now how BL is in the USA so I would have to
let them charge the taxes to USA buyers on my sales. But I didn't have paypal
activated so I never sold to USA buyers and all orders were cancelled or NPB
reports completed when the buyer never paid.

But BL still won't activate my store again saying I did tax evasion which
I actually did not! So now I am waiting for them to take their time and decide.
I will need everyone's support to convince them to turn it back on.

You literally said in your terms that any US customers should contact you directly
so you could sell them their parts outside of BL. Not only were you transacting
using the BL system without BL getting their fees (which is against the ToS),
technically BL still facilitated in getting that order done, so states could
have an argument of tax evasion in these cases. Whether that would be a solid
argument I don't know, but I can definitely see BL not wanting to "test the
waters" there.

Either way, you will have to work this out with BL. I don't see any use in
getting "everyone's support" as nobody else but you and BL are involved here,
and to put it bluntly "everyone" only sees your side of the story.

Anyways, still good luck.

IMHO its the buyers job only to set the status to complete. I dont know why
the seller has access to update the order status beyond shipped.

The function should be separated into "Seller complete" and "Buyer Complete"
columns. The seller can mark the order as complete for their recordkeeping and
the buyer can mark it complete when they are ready.

Not looking to start a big argument, but what would be the difference between
"shipped" and "seller complete"? I get the argument that some shops consider
the transaction not complete until the buyer confirms it is complete, but that
would make "seller complete" a state after "buyer complete", so "complete"? Or
is ''seller complete" an order that has a buyer's feedback posted
but no "complete" posted by buyer?

For us, "shipped" means we are done - unless buyer comes back with a question.
There is no telling if/when that would happen, so if we were to differentiate
between "shipped" and "seller complete", when do you suggest a seller puts it
from "shipped" to "seller complete"?

I do agree BL should communicate better (and I am aware this is not a court of
law, and IANAL), but if you look at it from a "laws" point of view - ignorance
of the law is never an excuse for breaking it, ask any lawyer. In BL's case,
the ToS is part of their law. Specifically, the following sections may
apply to your case (and there might be others):

Section 4, 3rd paragraph
Section 10.4

https://www.bricklink.com/v3/terms_of_service.page

However blunt the results are, I do agree with BL closing your shop. You will
need to work this out with BL admin, hopefully the closure is temporary and you
can work things out.

You might look at it from another angle, James: Practically speaking, it’s BrickLink
that “charge a USA buyer any taxes” via third party arrangements.

You, as representing today’s online vendor, do not determine, apply to invoice
(charge) or have access to any tax-funds collected for remittance.

As it stands currently, the site can only fulfill what is now an obligation,
by using the payment process. The Onsite method, contractually allows for this.

This.

Also (and not unsignificantly) - your terms flat-out advised US BL customers
to contact you off-site to arrange a sale. You can't use BL to generate Lego
sales that doesn't end up as an order with BL.

I checked our PayPal account and the payment was there, initiated by BrickLink,
very typical for a BL order.

We talked and asked him to place another order that I would set to "Paid", and
everything was "fixed".

I didn't open a ticket, but still have all info.

If this was instant check-out, your Paypal transaction should show an entry called
"Custom" (scroll down on the payment details) with a value like "BLLIVE_CUSTOM_ICxxxxxxx".
BL support should be able to trace that xxxxxxx number in their database.

I think the rubbing part (ooo-er) is way less for one minifig-in-parts in its
own little baggie then it is for a new off-the-shelf LEGO set where minifig parts
are mixed in with other sharp-edged parts in larger bags.

When we put a minifig from a new set into our inventory, we put all the relevant
parts of the fig in its onw little baggie. It does not get disturbed again until
we grab that baggie from storage and ship it out. Because the baggie is way smaller
(like a 3"x2"), the parts don't have much "freedom" (if any) to do any rubbing,
even while in transport.

I remember I read in 1990 ? Bruce Scheiner's bible: Applied Cryptography

An excellent book to learn about the 1s and 0s of cryptography in all its forms.
You should also read (if you haven't already) "Secrets and Lies" - a more
pragmatic book about this subject. After Bruce wrote "Applied Cryptography" he
got depressed because of all the issues with security (mostly because of the
fact there were perfectly fine technical solutions, yet massive failures in actually
applying it), and this book was born. Highly recommended.

To be fair, I'm a fledgling systems engineer undergoing training. I was using
a simulated learning environment with nodes designed to mimic what would be found
in the corporate production domains. The terminology is still relatively new
to me.

Fair enough. But using terminology that doesn't match 'real life'
will make it hard for others to help you.

Performing a kill -9 on the registry was actually killing the monitor. Corporate
tools are assigned to a special Linux group and breaking the corporate registry
by running a script led to the newgrp command (done by typing in "newgrp - [group]")
saying there were too many arguments among other things.

`newgrp - [group]` is not a valid command. You either want to change your primary
group (and use `newgrp [group]`) or reset your shell to its defaults (and use
`newgrp -`). Specifying both `-` and `[group]` is not allowed, and `newgrp` tells
you that - there are too many arguments.

I'm still learning. Only been at this a month and I'm grateful they taught
me like it was a classroom setting. The domain replication is what gave me severe
trouble.

Breaking a test environment and then trying to right the ship is one of the ways
you can learn the most. Try to approach your issue using small steps, and don't
try to fix it "in one go". Use tools that allow you to poke at your environment
in a controlled manner (like `smbclient`, `testparm` etc). Compare the setup
with a known working one (especially smb.conf). GUIs and scripted solutions can
hide the actual problems, especially ones which are not foreseen by its authors.

Good luck!

Imagine there being a slew of tools set to a specific group environment that
you need to newgrp into (yes, this is a Linux server). Now imagine you break
a registry somewhere by running a script that aids in domain replication. Can't
figure out what the script exactly did but all you know is that now you can't
newgrp anymore, and so every specialized tool you use is inaccessible.

So now you have this registry you're trying to kill by its process ID. Sending
a SIGKILL signal to it after doing ps -ef just closes your terminal. Logging
back in, it's still there. You really need to kill, cycle, and restart that
registry before proceeding with diagnosis and repair. Best close the domain and
then the service in charge of making sure things start up automatically.

Can't. Both ksh scripts you have available to stop the domain require the
registry working in order to proceed. Might as well restore from a snapshot at
this point.

Messy.

This all sounds weird. There is no registry in Linux (a registry is a Windows
thing). A Linux server can run Windows domain services through Samba, but this
is all configured in txt files - mainly smb.conf, or sometimes in a database
(but that would be specified in your smb.conf).

A SIGKILL won't terminate your shell, unless you either kill the shell itself,
kill its dependency (like an ssh session), or try to do something like `kill
-9 -1`.

If you need to use `newgrp` this implies you need to change the user's default
group membership for that current session. Is that user actually allowed to change
group membership (see `man newgrp`)? Does `newgrp` actually spit out a message
(or, failing that, what is its exit value)? If `newgrp` fails, you can also simply
(as root) use `vipw`/`vigr` to change that user's default group, and then
log in as that user.

Admins have not replied to these forum messages, and they have no requirement

Maybe Google. Though I suspect Niek is a well traveled man too

Cornwall was one of our fav places to visit when in the UK, but I won't pretend
to have an eidetic memory. I used the same tool as advising the curry place on
Victoria Road - Google Maps. I can spend hours zooming around on this. And on
Google Earth - many areas there are in 3D, so you can "fly around".

Where did you get that from ?

Spooky !

It was a toss-up between the chippy and the curry place on Victoria Road (although
many claim spicy food is good when the weather is hot, as it makes you sweat
as your body tries to cool down).

Enjoy your dinner!

OK, I tried an experiment and I was able to save a comment of 90 chars in length
- the one I submitted was much longer than 90 chars but it got cut off at 90.

The comment, ah, commented upon above is 200 characters. So maybe there was a
check on the server side after form submission to make sure the comment was 200
characters or fewer - now it checks for 90 or less.

What I've not tried is doing it through the API. That's a bit too much
work for me at the moment.

Just did a test trying to post a feedback of 118 chars through the API. The request
was accepted, but the result was truncated to 80 chars.

Sylvain has stopped his 1200ha barbecue on the east but there’s been a (for now)
11000ha one on the west (near Bordeaux) since Tuesday.

(1ha = 2.47 acres, don’t know what that makes in square libraries of Congress)

1200ha is about 0.5776 milliwales, 2962 football pitch, or 0.0004 belgium.

Thing is, the user IDs are used everywhere (messages, catalogue changes…).  That’s
why BL doesn’t delete users when the accounts are closed.  The names are replaced
with bl## so that the tables can still refer to them.

Yup. That is called a foreign key - ithe "userid" in the "forum_messages" table
refers to a primary key (the "id" in the users table).

IOW: you need more work to get rid of us

The SQL statement deletes the messages for the users mentioned by user 58243
(currently named "1001bricks"). He specifically said "delete from forum", not
"delete from BrickLink all together".

And it would not take that more work to get rid of users:

DELETE FROM users WHERE id=58243;

Byebye Sylvain #2 (who cares about dangling references in all other tables, right?).

Really makes me wonder the true cause of why...

Let's place the answer is C.

A: Inflation.
B: Lack of competition.
C: Because they can.

The correct answer is C.

In pretty much all of the for-profit companies, monetary goals are set by the
stakeholders (shareholders, board of directors etc). The vast majority of stakeholders
expect (read: require) the company to increase its yearly profits. _How_ this
is done is most times not of interest, and is up to the CEO and his/her minions.
You could grow your client base, sell more product to existing clients, create
new products to sell, work "leaner" (decrease your costs) or indeed simply raise
your prices. Since Paypal is, for large swaths of the world, still the de-facto
payment processor for online transactions (despite whatever Stripe et al try
to do), price increase is the easy way to increase profits.

So yeah, C it is.

Yup. Nation-wide. Rogers is the cause. Although it is mainly a cell phone carrier,
issues bleed over into many other Internet areas. Some weird dependencies surface
as well - a lot of machines will accept credit card payments, but refuse debit
transactions.

Today is the first day of the Calgary Stampede, and the first time they will

but who knows how that will pan out today.

It kinda looks like the message I get when I use Paypal multiple times through
a browser. Initially, I would need to go through the "I am not a robot" click-thingy,
but after a few times a message comes up at login, saying something to the effect
that Paypal now trusts the device I am using, and the robot clicks are now no
longer needed (but obviously the password is still required).

It looks like you are using their app though - I don't have any experience

If you're talking about lettermail above, last time I checked, Canada Post's
terms don't actually allow goods to be sent to the USA or internationally
using that method - paper only. I know it works, but at some point there will
be problems b/c it is against their terms.

Cheapest option to send Lego from Canada to the US with Canada Post is called
"Small Packet". See:

https://www.canadapost-postescanada.ca/cpc/en/business/shipping/international/compare/small-packet-usa.page

Depending on your account discounts, this should be around CAD 8 to CAD 9 for
the smallest packages.

Paypal now shows a big ugly banner, saying they will automatically switch from
"Paypal shipping" to "netParcel shipping" on June 1.

Currently, when we ship small orders to the US, we use the regular Canada Post
"small packet" service, which (for under 100gr) would cost around CAD 8.50.

We hooked up our Canada Post account to netParcel, and tried to ship a small
order to the US. The "small packet" service is no longer available, the cheapest
option would be UPS Standard 4 days for just over CAD 14 (so a CAD 6 raise in
shipping cost).

Am I missing something here? Or will we need to raise our shipping rates?

Quick follow-up:

I just got a call from netParcel. The guy said he read this forum thread, and
said that the reason CP "small packet" service for the US was missing was due
to a bug. This should be resolved coming Friday.

Looks like the netParcel people are on top of things. Thanks guy! (sorry, forgot

No minifigs equals an incomplete set.

AN INCREDIBLE DEAL, as we are trying to get rid of them. Perfect for sellers
who will resell the pieces at a mark up after buying them. CONTACT US FOR INQUIRIES!!

Hello! - does anyone know if the sticker sheet for 75895 Speed Champions Porsche
is the transparent type or the opaque solid colour type? - I'm building a
black version of the set for a friend and wondering if I can use some of the
original stickers or not..

Every now and then, a brief discussion comes up whether to assign a color to
a sticker sheet - the color would be of the background of the sticker sheet (so
most times trans-clear or white). See for instance

and its replies.

I ordered two..

Was one a limit?

Yes, there is a limit of 1 per household per project.

Reading is long since a lost art.

BrickLink doesn't handle the refund because they never actually have the
money, PayPal is the one responsible for returning the money. According to PayPal:
for purchases made with your credit or debit card, the refund can take up to
30 days to show up on your account. If you bought the item using your bank account
or PayPal balance, the balance will be credited to your PayPal account. Funds
can take three to five days to arrive in your account. Here is a link from PayPal
that explains it better.

Not quite. For onsite Paypal payments, BrickLink is actually the "facilitator".
Any payment done through onsite PP is under control of BL. This is how BL is
able to siphon off the taxes part. Since BL has control over these payments,
they can also initiate a refund.

So you are correct in that BL doesn't have the money, but you are incorrect
in claiming they therefore can't handle a refund. They most definitely can.

Forgot - to add to this, you should refund through BL if there were taxes
involved, so BL can refund the tax part as well (otherwise the seller would have
to pay back the tax part).

But what when someone else has 50 to sell and thinks they sold for an inflated
price and it just drives the price up for no other reason than a glitch in the

That would be a refreshing change.

I have purchased a bulk buy of accessories and it seems that there are two colors
of gold for this part. It seems a clear difference in color like one is pearl
gold and the other is metallic pearl gold. Or even pearl light gold.

The part color only shows pearl gold.

There are separate numbers on them too: 11-02 and 05-02.

The numbers are mold cavities.

Whenever something bad happens on the other side of Canada, my mom always assumes

we offer local pick-up, feel free to place an order and swing by!
