Not necessarily. If the alternate part was caught late and added to the catalog
late, then this set may have originally come with only 2453b. I will try to find
some evidence for this, but if I can't, this request will be rejected.

I checked this set in my personal collection. It has 2453a. It was bought new

I just bought used that was almost complete. But I noticed that the
four baseplates seems to have been custom made from a larger baseplate,
because the two sides are clearly a lighter shade of green (I guess this is where
the cuts have been made), and that three corners are not round, but have been
trimmed to give a rounded look.
Are these homemade, or it is possible that LEGO produced these plates from larger
plates (e.g. 1x 16x32 into 4x 8x16) in the late 70's to save the price of
making a 8x16 baseplate mold?

There was another recent discussion about this where it was confirmed that Lego
would produce large baseplates and cut them into smaller baseplates.

|
We may have differing opinions on this - not sure because we've never discussed
it. My opinion is that a sticker is a part. We consider it a part and TLG considers
it a part and includes it in the part count.
If you have an extra one of these parts, then I believe it fits the definition
of an extra part and should be included in the set inventory as such:
Were sticker sheets systematically included as extras in some sets in the way
that other parts are? We really don't know, since we haven't been keeping
data on extra appearances. The current inventory guidelines don't address
how frequently an extra must appear in order to be added to the inventory, but
the unwritten rule has been one time.
What are your thoughts?
|
In my experience extra sticker sheets are caused by packing errors and they are
not systematically included as extras. This is supported by the fact that I've
bought multiples of the same set from the same supplier and found an extra sheet
in only one of the sets.
In my opinion extras should only be extra parts that Lego put in sets for at
least one production run of the set. For example there are some sets that were
first produced before 1x1 plates were included as extras but later production
runs did include them as extras. For those sets I support the inclusion of them
as extra parts.
But the sticker sheets were clearly not intended to be included as extra parts
and don't appear often enough to justify including them as extra parts.

Comments from Submitter:
I got this set when it was new and have looked for it several times to fix the inventory. Today I stumbled upon it by accident.
Concerning taps, what is our endgame? I have LBG nozzle with no hole and that is in the inventory as alternates. (no information on the white ones because I never built that building) But no one has come forward with a no nozzle for many years. I tried to study the change log to figure out a clear timeline and I got lost. But I think the undetermined taps should either be turned to hole in nozzle or taken out of the inventory.
|
As you didn't build it from sealed contents I just formaly confirm "a" variant
of this part. It is visible in this review fro sealed set contents
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQjEOw3FWx8
LBG tap is in this review also visible as "b" variant (unfortunetly there is
no way to confirm white one, way of use in the build make it almost impossible)
So about this tap I looked at this problem.
As I see we are getting close to finsh sorting them. Only 26 sets, 1 book ant
3 gears left to check and sort. Other almost 900 sets have particular variant
in their inventory So I think we have a pattern and a time line for this
part quite checked and some conclusions can be made for this part
When you comparing timline there is some interesting pattern.
As you can see undetermined one is left in sets from following years:
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=4599&v=3&in=S
2009 - 11 sets
2010 - 7 sets
2011 - 4 sets
2012 - 4 sets
In the meantime when dealing with your request I corrected undetermined for two
sets from 2012 (to look if something could be done here) these two set hadn't
alternate tap in their inventories so it was simple checking what variant is
confirmed there in sealed set content.
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1118887
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1118885
So from 2012 we have only four left. Three sets (10230 - set you are asking,
4205, 9463) have confirmed variant in alternate section and it is "b". Fourth
one have only undetermined variant but is tough one, it is now rare set and I
couldn't be able to find any reliable source to check it.
As you check timeline for "a" variant
https://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemIn.asp?P=4599a&in=S
you will see that confirmed appearance of this older one is only in a few sets
in above years:
2009 - 9 sets
2010 - 3 sets
2011 - 2 sets only! (and both have it in alternate section)
no confirmed sets with "a" from 2012 so far.
So check timline for "b" you will see that confirmed appearance of this new one
is in many sets in above years:
2009- 30 sets
2010 - 32 sets
2011 - 39 sets
2012 - 46 sets!
So there are 46 sets from 2012 with confirmed "b" variant an none found with
"a" variant. We have three now with undetermined which are also confirmed having
"b" but in alternate section. So in this case seeing also that in 2011 only two
were confirmed (from 39 having "b") with "a" I think in this three sets we can
delete undetermine and move "b" to regular section. If somone find "a" variant
in them confirmed from sealed set contents we can always add it to alternate
as in those from 2011.
I didn't have time to check the others left from other years. But in free
time I will come back to this problem and see if more can be cleared here from
undetermine to finally finish sorting these taps, as I said we are very near
the end here.
But before I make such change for these three from 2012:
I will wait for Randy opinion if he agree with me. Or maybe he have different
idea how to deal in this case or some more sources to check.
Randy your opinion?
Or we still wait for a proof for "a" ?
I know I writen this
https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1103839 but after above analysis
I've changed my mind. First we could try to once again maybe confirm "b"
for these three sets and then get rid of undetermined from them.
P.S.
about above message link from mentioned threat https://www.bricklink.com/message.asp?ID=1103746.
There was a try to get rid of these undetermine but it was wrong because submitter
tried without a prof change simple undetermined to old variant "a" and for this
we must have proof from reliable sources. Especially in this case for 2012 set
when no 2012 was yet confired having this variant even as alternate.
|
Based on the change log for 10230 it seems that both variants were found in that
set. The white 4599 was added to the inventory in December 2013 by TMX37 when
4599b was already in the inventory. Unfortunately the forum messages from that
time are lost, butthis seems to indicate that TMX37 found a tap with hole.
Based on the log we can also conclude that the set was originally inventoried
was white 4599b and light bluish gray 4599. The fact that it was inventoried
with different variants in the two colors probably means that the light bluish
gray tap had was the variant with the hole.

in White (1x)

Can we be sure that all those part variants were changed at the same time? Lego
usually doesn't throw away old parts, so it's possible that there were
sets where some parts were the old variants while others were already replaced
with the new variants.

This set is before the beginning of your timeline, so should certainly have them
on a sprue. As far as I remember in the earlier sets they always came on a sprue.
Somewhere around 1990 (give or take a few years) they no longer came with the
sprue.

Found another one in the notes on my desk!
I would like to see a part category created called "Cardboard Sleeve". This category
would include any cardboard sleeves that originally come in sets. Why is this
important?
(1) These cardboard sleeves could be numbered according to the number on the
cardboard sleeve so that they are searchable.
(2) These cardboard sleeves could then be added to set inventories as they originally
came packaged.
(3) These cardboard sleeves could then be inventoried so they would not need
to be opened to know what is in them.
(4) Additional notes on catalog entries could be completely removed and cleaned
up (such as the ones on part 522).
(5) People would have no reason to keep trying to add the codes on the cardboard
sleeves as PCCs to catalog entries (such as the ones on part 522).
Cheers,
Randy

Good idea. We already recently added all the tool packs that came packed in plastic

I dig through this
There where you add 3794 as an alternate I changed. Sometimes also when adding
3794b as an alternate in change request you wrote that you found both variants
when parting particular sets so there I also changed undetermine to a. Currently
to all requests before the 22th of April 2014 no additional information in masseages
were preserved. So there I changed only when you added 3794 as an alternate.
Finally 34 sets could be changed https://www.bricklink.com/catalogInvChangeItem.asp

Thanks for doing all that. I knew about that page to find all my approved inventory
change requests, but I didn't want to go through all of them so I was hoping
that there was a way to narrow it down to find only the ones that involve a specific
part.
