X Discussion Topic Only - Colors

BrickLink maintains a Color Guide that lists our recognized colors. BrickLink's color names do not always match the LEGO Group's color names and we do not recognize all colors the LEGO Group has used. Only items in the Parts and Gear item types can be assigned colors.

Known colors for a part or gear are based on inventory inclusions and will not appear unless the item exists in an inventory. The system will recognize up to 10 levels of inventory inclusions (for example, a subpart that appears in a part that appears in a figure that appears in gear included in a set). Known colors for catalog entries are based on real-time data. Known colors for other pages and features are cached and updated once daily.

Parts are assigned colors as follows:
  • Sticker sheets, paper parts, and thin plastic parts like sails or wings are assigned the N/A (Not Applicable) color.
  • Multicolored parts, meaning part color and not pattern, with color differences that cannot be briefly described in the title are assigned the N/A color.
  • All other multicolored parts are assigned the most obvious or visible color, ideally the least variable.
  • Assemblies are assigned the color of the base part, typically meaning the non-moving part of the assembly.
  • In the absence of any obvious color or in disputable cases, the color of the base or bottommost part is assigned.

Gear should only be assigned colors when the item is a solid or one predominant color and the item exists in multiple colors within the same catalog entry.
