X Discussion Topic Only - Figure Titles

Figure Titles:

The following figure titling criteria are used in descending order:

  1. Theme or Figure Type - If the figure is specific to a theme or is of a specific type this becomes the first word in the title. This is typically only used for figures other than the standard minifigure such as dolls, micro dolls, Technic figures, Bionicle figures, etc. Examples of themes where this titling is used are Friends, Duplo, Belville, Scala, etc.
  2. Character Name - If the figure has an official name, this is used without any further descriptive text unless necessary. Proper sorting requires that the figure's most basic name always occurs first in the title ("Benny, Apocalypse Benny" instead of "Apocalypse Benny").
  3. Occupation or Type - If the figure is unnamed, the occupation or type is used. Occupations include such things as firefighter, police, pilot, caroler, chef, etc. Types include skeletons, ghosts, droids, robots, etc. and may also include terms like Scout Trooper or Clone Trooper for Star Wars figures. The occupation or type always appears first in the title. Use of a qualifier is acceptable in the interest of grouping similar figures (Arctic Medic, for example, rather than merely Medic). Set-specific occupational distinctions are allowed after the main descriptor (Driver, Race, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, for example).
  4. Age and Gender - If the figure could not be titled using the above criteria, the figure is titled by first age and then gender ("Older Adult, Female," for example).
  5. Torso - In rare instances when all other methods are exhausted figures are named by torso. When used, the word "Torso" is the first word in the title, followed by a brief (meaning not a full) description of the torso.

Additional Figure Titling Guidelines:
  • Age - Age identifiers are limited to these specific words: baby, child, adult, and older adult.
  • Categories in Titles - Categories (especially sub-categories) are, generally speaking, not used in figure titles.
  • Conjunctions - Conjunctions such as "with" or "and" are not used in figure titles.
  • Distinguishers - Text added to distinguish different versions is limited to the absolute minimum necessary and to the most obvious difference.
  • Exception, Collectible Figures - Collectible figures always have the specific words "Figure Only" at the end of the title.
  • Exception, Duplo - Duplo figures are specifically excepted from some of these guidelines because of the difficulty in locating them.
  • Excluded Words - The following words should not appear in figure titles: "figure" and "pattern."
  • Gender - Gender identifiers are limited to these specific words: female, male, boy, and girl.
  • Punctuation - Only commas and apostrophes may be used in figure titles, with all other punctuation disallowed unless required as part of a character name.
  • Say-Nothing Titles - Numbers are never used to indicate versions (Pilot 1, Pilot 2, for example), nor are any other non-obvious distinguishers.
  • Search Terms - It may be necessary to include additional keywords for searching purposes. These are included at the end of the title.
  • Set Numbers - Figure titles don't include set, book, or gear numbers. If included, they are removed when the figure is added to an inventory.
  • Title Duplication - No two figures should ever have exactly the same title except when marked for deletion.
  • Word Duplication - With the exception of character names, words generally should not be duplicated in figure titles.
