| Please make changes to the following inventory:
* Add 8 Part 4085b Medium Blue Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Clip Vertical - Type 2 (thin U clip) (match ID 1)
* Change 8 Part Medium Blue 4085d Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Clip Vertical - Type 4 (thick open O clip) {Regular to Alternate} {match ID 0 to 1}
Comments from Submitter:
I currently have 3 original Used copies of this set. Each was purchased from its original owner. All 3 versions have the "Thin U Clip" variant (Part 4085b) of all 8 Medium Blue Plate Modified 1x1 with Clip Vertical. This coincides with its appearance in the Grand Carousel that same year. Some of the last produced copies might contain part variant 4085d, but I believe these to be extremely rare. Please change this variant appearance to Alternate.

If you look at the logs, the 'regular' and 'alternate' have been
changed 3 times so far (and so this is the 4th one *sigh*).
How hard can it be to 'invetory' a set with a certain type (first one
found by the sumitter of the inventory), and then simply add alternates along
the way
The b, c, d, versions of this part are being found randomly in sets and there
isn't a clear call as to 'when' LEGO uses them, as it depends which
'plant' produces them and 'where' TLG stocks them...
I found all 'd' types in my copy of the winter holiday train, except
1, which was a 'b' type. I assume a few where at the bottom of TLG's
storage box... Why? because TLG doesn't differentiate them and put's
tem all together

Eric, thank you for the reply. Yes, I also read the inventory change log and
saw the previous changes (with a loud sigh as well). I could not understand
why an "Alternate" was never created for this part, as is the case for many other
set inventories.
Obviously, having is convenient to have listed in the official inventory
for such a high value set. That variant is much more accessible on the open
market. Also, in 1 of my sets, the original have perished due to air
exposure. The clips simply split the last time I opened the doors. I will most
likely replace with the "Open O" modern variant as it more robust.
But the fact remains that every original version of this set that I have come
across uses the "Thin U" vertical clip variant. So I felt it was important to
correct the inventory as such. Hopefully the addition of the Alternate will
help this inventory be at peace with everyone. Other set owners are encouraged
to check their models and chime in!

My model is of the same type ("thin U") as the three copies you currently own.
I second your approach to make the commonly found variant the regular version
and the rarely found ones should be alternates only.
However, I am not supporting any inventory change based on such a low number
of examined sets - let (at least!) 20 set owners (better 40-50) comment here
and we begin to get a picture of variant distribution, but please do not
judge by the three copies you own (or four, including mine).
Or, as alternative: Provide some evidence supporting your belief.

Here is some supporting evidence:
1. My 3 Used copies were purchased from their original owners in Virginia, Colorado,
and California over a period of years. This is a good indicator that sets distributed
across the continental U.S.A. had the "Thin U" variant.
2. The only other appearance of in Medium Blue is in 2009 for the Grand
Carousel and Robo Champ sets. The Beetle was released the prior year in 2008...
3. The Inventory of does not have in Medium Blue listed
as an Alternate. Is that not suspicious?
4. The Inventory of [G=3835] has 4085b (thin U) listed as the Main, with 4085d
(Open O) listed as the Alternate.
5. The last and only appearance of 4085b (thin U) was 2 years later, when it
appeared as an Alternate in . These were most likely "at the bottom
of the bin" as Eric so eloquently put it.
Meanwhile, I encourage all Forum readers with an accessible copy of this set
to check their clip variants and report. Thanks in advance. I am open to being
proven wrong
